Students and volunteers may not have much of a say or may not be involved in the inner workings and overall process. The student advisory board may also tackle more serious issues and have less involvement and interaction with general student body. EMPOWER / SLT offers an opportunity for student leadership to be more involved in certain processes and have more of a say when change takes place. A variety of opportunities are offered to students to take on leadership roles in whatever capacity is most comfortable. There is also more engagement with general student body. I have been a leader in PEOPLE through my roles in EMPOWER and SLT. It fosters community and offers opportunities for leadership, beginning your first year in the program. Different opportunities to get involved and build community include scholar panel discussions, planning committees, employment, group discussion, study away trips, offered program projects, etc. You are guided by advisors throughout your high school and college journey, but you're encouraged to take control in a number of areas and pursue different opportunities on your own. SLT is a group designed to help improve a group of students leadership skill and give them an insight to how things function in the background. Being at home and trying to adjust to the college courses, I felt very alone. I talked to one of my college advisors from PEOPLE about how I felt, and he confided in me that many of my peers felt the same way. The PEOPLE program is a diverse scholarship program at UW Madison. In their mission of diversity and inclusion, they created the Empower PEOPLE team. This entailed PEOPLE students coming together for creative group events where all PEOPLE scholars could engage in fun activities and chat with one another despite being online. It is very nice to have student-led events because who knows what students like other students. Through this experience, I was able to meet a lot of upperclassmen and get college advice from them.
