The transdisciplinary approach requires students to develop life skills by developing interdisciplinary and disciplinary skills. There are two roads that lead to transdisciplinary integration: project based learning and student centered curriculum. High Tech High in the United States of America has proven how this approach can be very successful.

This approach is seen in classrooms where teachers integrate the sub disciplinary approach within subject disciplines. The integration of reading, writing, oral language and collaboration is excellent example. The curriculum is learnt around common learnings in a variety of subject areas. The big ideas that are embedded across disciplines are interdisciplinary skills and concepts. Disciplines can be identified but are not considered important like they are in the multidisciplinary approach. An excellent example of this at Minimbah on the Mornington peninsula is a unit of work where children researched and made wind mills while also learning language skills. This included the interdisciplinary skill of communication, thinking skills and writing. These concepts or the big ideas also cross over to other disciplines beyond the windmill machines. This is evident when concepts are shared with other units to teach similar skills. Teachers who use this approach in the classroom work with themes to organize the curriculum standards. It can occur through sequenced models where domains are viewed as separate but connected through sequenced frameworks enabling teachers to arrange topics so units with similar topics coincide.The visual table below highlights the relationship between subjects and a common theme. One example in the classroom includes the study of sustainability and human rights.
