It is exposed to cold and warm air which makes it have four seasons. Temperate deciduous forests have a great variety of plant species. Lichen, moss, ferns, wildflowers and other small plants can be found on the forest floor. Deciduous trees are trees with leaves rather than pine needles, and they dominate temperate forests. They have leaves so they can absorb more sunlight and water. They lose their leaves during winter to keep them from freezing. 
Another adaptation is that the trees grow bark that protects the inner core from cold temperatures, while protecting the tree from dangerous fungi. It has a heavy coat of fat to stay warm and hibernate in winter. Another adaptation for the black bear is that they have long claws.
