At the peak of the black death many people were overwhelmed by the number of deaths that some people had to be taken to the church becuase there was not enough concecrated land available - consecrated land is the land that has been declared sacred. Some accounts show that in some cities including Avignon, France, London and England people were thrown into the River or piled up in pits due to the lack of memorial burial sites. Coffins were occasionally available so bodies were placed on boards to be carried to graveyards or pits. An even sadder way to bury people was to stack bodies on top of each other and bury them in the same hole. As some bodies were quite close to the surface from being stacked on top of one another many dogs used to dig them up and leave them resting in no peace at all especially as it was a tragic way to die.

The black death is supposed to have originated in the Arid plains of Central Africa where it then got transported along the Silk Road which was an ancient network of trade routes for centuries which connected from the Asian Continent to the West and Eastern parts of China and then to the Mediterranean sea. The first place after travelling along the Silk Road which was affected by the black plague was Crimea and it was affected in 1343. From there it was believed to be transported by an oriental rat flea which was carried by a black rat that were common passengers on merchant ships. Spreading through the Mediterranean and Europe in 1346 - 1353 it is estimated to have killed 30 - 60% of Europes population. In recent times, 2016 a girl has been treated for the plague and a boy has unfortunately passed away from it. although, now it is of a much greater chance of surviving with the right care and antibiotics.

The plague was devastating it killed families at a time and destroyed villages. According to Agnolo Di Tura, a chronicler at the time 50,000 people died in Siena including 36,000 that were classified as old. After the plague had passed only 10,000 remained in Siena out of a total population of 96,000 people. In Europe it is recorded using the statistics based on the records kept in England that one third of the population in Europe died from the black death which results in 20 million people. Other regions including Asia, the Middle East, North America and including Europe there was a broad estimate of 80 million deaths. In the British Isles and ireland the estimated death toll for the bubonic plague was 50%, the pneumonic plague was 90% and the septicaemia plague was 100% which meant if you got this type of plague you knew that your life was sadly coming to an end.

Preventions and Treatments

The people in medieval times were uneducated about hygiene and disease. There first guess at what started the plague was through the air so to prevent them getting the Black Plague through the air (called miasma) they would burn incense like juniper and Rosemary, people would dunk their handkerchiefs in aromatic oils to cover their nose and mouth from the infected air, church bells would ring to get rid of the plague - People believed this prevention as when there was a crisis the church bells would ring so that's why they thought it was a suitable prevention becuase it was like the Black Plague crisis and another prevention created by Pope Clement VI, fearing for his safety came up with the idea to sit next to two large fires which he believed would keep the air pure. This was actually a good prevention as the plague bacteria was actually killed by heat. The treatments that the people in the medieval times would've used were probably wivestales as some of these are pretty crazy and out of the ordinary. It is believed that treacle - the sticky sweet substance would be a great treatment to get rid of the Black Death and it was given to every sick patient. Although, normal treackle like the one you would buy from the shops would not be acceptable it would have to be ten years old so the old, smelly sticky substance would be used not only to combat the bad effects of the disease but also to get rid of the disease from your body forever. When people figured out that the plague was in the air people would either visit foul smelling sewers or even live there as they believed that the plague would not reach them down there and they would be safe from catching the plague. This treatment of course didn't work as not only could they catch the plague down there but they also could Catch a variety of other diseases.

The plague had a significant impact on the societies as it travelled across Europe, Asia and Africa. In Europe all people from every level of society struggled with the enormous death tolls, the symptoms and understanding that there life was going to end if they caught the plague. After the plague many building in different cities around the world collapsed, in the absence of inhabitants. Many small villages were completely deserted because everyone who used to live there had died from the plague. During the plague the authority of law and human divine was lacking from the people who should've administered and enforced them. Most of these high power people were either dead or very bedridden sick that they were unable to carry out their job. Faith in religion decreased after the plague because of both the amount of people dying in their community and also because of the failure to provide prayer to assist the sick and dying. The economy around the end of the plague had an extreme downfall which meant to produce goods through trade was very costly and the prices of the goods produced skyrocketed. At the end of the plague the society was much different in terms of living as many family members were not there as they had died from the plague or their lifestyle was different in terms of how the society has changed physically, economically and socially.

Treatment of Jews

In medieval society discrimination against Jewish people was deeply rooted. During the fourteenth century the church had isolated the Jews from the Christian society which was achieved through laws and prevented the Jewish people to hire Christian servants, work as doctors outside their jewish community, sell any kind of goods to Christians also many jobs and trades were closed to Jews such as weaving, tailoring and goldsmithing which were some of the most important jobs around this time. The prevention of a Jew ever coming into contact with a Christian or of another type of religion was clearly managed by a badge which the Jews had to wear wherever they went, they also experienced persecution and were told to leave the towns and cities and even had some of their limited property taken off them. There was not an explanation to why this would happen to them but people believe that it was simply because they were a Jew. Jews were very unpopular from the beginning so when the plague was first brought out many people would blame their suffering to a scapegoat which means (someone to blame for things going wrong). They believed that the Jewish religion was capable on poisoning the Christian community and infecting the inhabitants with the plague. Even though the Jewish people were dying at the same rate as the Christians the Christians still believed that it was the Jews who brought this deadly disease to Europe. In September of 1348 a group of Jews were put onto to trial at Chillon, as they were charged with poisoning wells at Neustadt. In November that year Jews were burnt to death in cities throughout Germany. In 1349 several weeks before the first signs of the plague 2000 Jews were first put to death. The number of slaughtered Jews in this era was as high as 16000 which was addressed by a chronicler at the time. The jewish population got gradually smaller and smaller from the amount of people dying and being killed by Christian people. Many large and small jewish communities never recovered
