The Persian army, 48,000 soldiers, waited on the plain of Marathon below. Phidippides, a Greek messenger, ran 42 kilometres, 26 miles, from Marathon to Athens, to announce that the Greeks won. From this great event, the first marathon race of the modern Olympic Games was run in 1896.
