After talking to the woman, the girl took an oversimplifying position by saying that walking on the line was easy. The girl was thoughtful to begin with and did not look very happy. She seemed to recognise the woman because she was willing to try her suggestion. She became interested in the game and although she was stumped at having to jump a long way, she was encouraged to find that she could make up some rules herself. They seemed to have some history together and there was a deeper meaning to the game.

She was bored. When a woman invited her to play a game of lines on the ground, the girl hesitated, uncertain. The woman persisted in her efforts to engage the girl's interest. The girl was curious, questioning. She arose and started to walk along the line. Then she stopped, challenged the woman, her interesting quickening. The girl became confident. She solved the problem of a break in the line. Exhilarated, the girl ran back and forth to the end of the game. As they come closer to the girl’s home the boy takes her hand and they finish hand in hand. 

By the gate the boy gives her a kiss on the cheek, she runs immediately home, up to her bedroom and opens her diary. She writes “Julian gave me a kiss.”

Looking for inspiration to write more she grabs her pen sharpener.

At that point voices can be heard, and while the girl is sharpening her pen cries and moans seem to be coming from pens.

They truly are since the audience is made of pens and the movie is titled “the pen sharpener massacre”.
