Since Florida became a new state, the economy was growing. This resulted in more opportunities for agriculture as well as, a growth in the population. Slaves would escape to freedom in Florida, and the Indians would not force them back to where they were from. This benefited the US because the free slaves living in Florida were forced back into slavery creating a stronger workforce. It also allowed for the U.S to expand further, and manifest destiny.

In the second Seminole War, the U.S spent seven years putting down resistance at a cost of $20 million and 1,500 casualties. The United States removed about 4,400 individuals from the Seminole Nation to the Indian territory, in Oklahoma but, 300-500 Individuals managed to stay in Florida. The gaining of the Territory also caused more conflict between the Native Americans and the U.S.

After a failed attempt at a treaty, The U.S organized two military campaigns to forcibly remove the Seminole from their land. Eventually, the Seminole were forced to move to Oklahoma. A journey like that caused death and removed the Seminole from their native land, and it split the tribe, since not everyone went. Some remained in Florida, but the tribe never recovered.

Was the U.S. justified in acquiring the territory? Why or why not?

While the U.S bought the territory through Spain fairly, the events that lead up to the sale were filled with conflict. The Spanish and Seminole were living well in the territory, and Spain most likely would not have sold if the U.S had not invaded. This makes the sale much less legitimate, as Spain was essentially forced to sell. Not only that, but the events following the sale, like the military campaigns, or the forced removal of the Seminole tribe, caused sadness and death for both sides. The U.S was not justified.
