In Moffat and Gatiss’ adaptation of Conan Doyle's “A Study in Scarlet,” we see that the series is now set in contemporary times. The modernization of Doyle’s story by Moffat and Gatiss is able to resonate with both the society we now live in and the people who watch the show. Moffat and Gatiss effectively portray many issues our society struggles with, which Doyle wasn’t able to do because of the time “A Study in Scarlet” was written. Struggles such as suicidal tendencies, PTSD and the effect it has on soldiers, as well as feminism.

I believe Moffat and Gatiss intentionally explore PTSD and its effects through Watson. They have a therapist mention that Watson has been traumatized by the war, which is true, but it’s not in the way they think. Instead of having Watson be put off by any type of violence that could make him remember his service, we see him craving him. Doyle seldom rummages through Watson’s past in the military; however, Moffat and Gatiss skillfully utilize his past to add more depth to Watson’s character. We see Watson talk about the army pension and how it’s not enough for basic living. This is a struggle in our modern day, and Moffat and Gatiss were able to portray this in a way that we understand is a fact.

“I had neither kith nor kin in England, and was therefore as free as air—or as free as an income of eleven shillings and sixpence a day will permit a man to be.” Both “A Study in Scarlet” and “A Study in Pink” portray the low salaries of soldiers, however, Moffat and Gatiss are able to make it seem more prominent. There’s not much Watson, in both the original book and the show, can do with their limited amount of money. Furthermore, this creates Watson’s need for a roommate. We know how expensive housing can be now, heightening our relation to this wonderful modern adaptation.

THE GUNNING FOG INDEX IS 12.46

Sherlock Holmes, the primary focus of “A Study in Scarlet” written by Arthur Conan Doyle and the BBC screenplay “A Study In Pink” co-written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, is an example of the pinnacle any logician should strive for. Moffat and Gatiss expertly adapted Doyle's original story to fit within the contemporary themes of 2010 to 2016, therefore, I’d like to figure out what messages and or issues Moffat and Gatiss hoped to address in their adaptation. In both the screenplay and the book we are
first introduced to Dr. John Watson, our clever, war-hardened, sufferer of PTSD, and Sherlock’s most loyal companion. In Doyle’s book, we are given a brief introduction to Watson’s character, his current situation, and a bit about the war's effect on him physically and mentally; likewise, in the screenplay, we’re given a brief introduction to
Watson with some additional details about him through expressive visuals, Moffat and Gatiss articulately express each emotion Watson feels. The first contemporary issue I
believe Moffat and Gatiss were trying to address is the difficulty many veterans had adjusting back to civilian life, specifically the war in Afghanistan. Throughout the first
episode of the BBC’s screenplay “A Study in Pink,” we see that Watson has been in need of excitement since he was discharged from the army due to injury, and his
longing for the excitement was quenched by working with Sherlock as shown by him forgetting his cane on multiple occasions. Likewise, In Doyle's original story, we see
Watson begin in a state of depression and boredom, “There I stayed for some time at a private hotel in the Strand, leading a comfortless, meaningless existence, and spending
such money as I had, considerably more freely than I ought.” Over time within the screenplay we also see Watson become content once he begins working with Sherlock and his life gains some meaning once again.

Gunning Fog Index score: 18.21

In the original Sherlock Holmes story, A Study In Scarlet, the themes of loss and grief; A Study In Pink, however, traverse more complex and contemporary themes. The ideas of drug abuse and affairs were almost unheard of in the 1800s, and are much more common in the current times. One theme subtly explored in A Study In Pink is toxic masculinity. The idea that men cannot express feelings, to the point where a therapist is referred to as “a shrink” is shown throughout the episode. Jefferson, as opposed to talking to someone and appreciating life, decides to commit murders with the time he has left and has a strong reluctance to do something good for himself and enunciate his feelings. In A Study In Scarlet Doyle bluntly yet carefully explores the themes of loss in a more tragic way. Rather than using divorce, using death. Thus exploring a greater loss and hence a greater chance of pity and sympathy for the character and understanding his motives. This ties back to the theme of toxic masculinity, and how men are viewed to be mentally strong and can’t feel what is considered “weak”; furthermore, the idea that self-expression is something that men typically can’t/won't do. Moffat and Gatiss subtly show this with Jefferson’s character, explicitly stating that he is still deeply hurt by the divorce and losing his children. As provided by the original, A Study In Scarlet, “I knew of their guilt though, and I determined that I should be judge, jury, and executioner all rolled into one. You’d have done the same, if you have any manhood in you,” From this line of dialogue alone we can infer that Jefferson believes the “manly” thing to do would be to commit murders, as seen in Moffat and Gatiss’ work.

GUNNING-FOG = 12.90

Sherlock Holmes's “A Study In Scarlet” was an outstanding and almost revolutionary piece of literature. A Study In Scarlet was originally written by Arthur Conan Doyle. Throughout the story, Doyle perfectly and meticulously crafted a beautiful plot with all kinds of connections and meanings. Then, in 2010 A Study In Scarlet was revised and modernized into a series called “A Study In Pink”. Steven Moffit and Mark Gattis wrote a study in pink. Likewise to Doyle, Moffit and Gattis intentionally infuse and intertwine many themes; though, it is more connective to the newer generations. For example, cell phones and GPS are predominantly represented throughout A Study In Pink, which at the time was something modern yet unfamiliar. This unfamiliarity developed excitement in the newer generation watching the series.

Furthermore, Doyle often made reference to PTSD in the story to likely connect with readers of that time period; Moffit and Gattis, Conversely, do not touch on this subject as much. However, Moffit and Gattis tend to introduce topics such as femininity, unsuccessful marriage, medical advancements, and even neurodivergence. These topics are all represented in A Study In Scarlet but are more so in A Study In Pink because this better relates to the target audience. For example, at the time of A Study In Pink's production, neurodivergence was just beginning to be better understood and better represented. Femininity was also a significant rise. Therefore, you can notice these topics.

I would also like to point out how well Moffitt, Gattis, and Doyle connected events and placed clues as writers. For example, in "A Study in Scarlet" the narrator states “The regiment was stationed in India at the time, and before I could join it, the second Afghan war had broken out”. Then later it explains how Watson, the narrator, was really empathetic to the murders and those who died; therefore allowing the inference that Watson is still affected by the war. Then the writers of a study in pink imamate Doyles character design for Watson through his psychosomatic injury. This is one of many examples of how successful the writers were at connection and clues.

Gunning fox index score- 12.65

Moffat and Gattis masterfully modernized the original writing of Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study In Scarlet in the first episode of the BBC’s Sherlock, A Study In Pink by focusing on contemporary themes and societal issues. One of these issues is the portrayal of people with autism: Sherlock shows signs of being on the spectrum, as he notices key details that no one else sees, but struggles to pick up clear hints that most people would notice right away. For instance, when Ms. Adler tries to flirt with our main protagonist, he declines and even insults her look later. Conversely, Doyle focuses more on his keen sense of observation, rather than his lack of social skills. Another issue that is tackled in Moffat and Gattis’ A Study In Pink is the perils of peer pressure. In the final scene, Moffat and Gatiss slowly showcase Sherlock as succumbing to the mysterious cabbie’s powerful peer pressure, as he pushes him into nearly taking one of the pills, only for Watson to shoot the cab driver through the window, saving Sherlock’s life. However, in Doyle’s original writings, the final fight scene is much more physical than psychological, with him earlier figuring out that “Of the two pills in that box one was of the most deadly poison, and the other was entirely harmless,” completely dispelling any chance for a psychological battle to occur. Another issue that Moffat and Gattis meticulously explored was the reality of suicide. In an early scene, it is shown that many people who have committed suicide and the impact this had on those who knew them well (it is later revealed that the cab driver talked them into killing themselves), while Doyle does not make any reference of suicide or self harm in his book.

Gunning Fog Index: 14.68

Moffat and Gattis beautifully shape-shift Doyle’s “A Study in Scarlet” into a more modern piece of media; although, the revamped story has some added elements which were not in the original. One of these elements was that the murderer had a sponsor who would pay the murderer when he killed a victim.

We learn through the murderer that the sponsor is a fan of Sherlock. I believe the sponsor perceived Sherlock would analyze these murders. A Sherlock fan watching Sherlock decipher a crime would likely be entertained, as deciphering crimes is what Sherlock is recognized for.

I believe what Moffat and Gattis wanted us to understand was the extremes this sponsor would go through just to receive their preferred entertainment. Maybe they hoped we would inspect our extremes for entertainment, or how far we were willing to go for entertainment.

Doyle steadily showcases the motives of the murderer; however, Doyle’s murderer’s motive was revenge, while BBC’s murderer’s sponsor had the motive of money. But Sherlock’s motives in both stories have a similar motive to the BBC’s murderer sponsor, they perform for fun.

A section of “A Study in Scarlet” says “They have their knives into one another, too. They are as jealous as a pair of professional beauties. There will be some fun over this case if they are both put upon the scent.” The dialogue from that section is said by Sherlock, and he mentions “fun over this case”. This suggests that Sherlock enjoys solving these murders, but Sherlock doesn’t take them seriously.

BBC’s murderer sponsor and Doyle’s Sherlock both function for entertainment, but the sponsor takes this to the extreme, as he is willing to place entertainment over lives. I believe Doyle wanted to show off Sherlock by allowing him to display entertainment with these cases, while Moffat and Gattis desired us to reflect on our extremes.

-----------------------------THE GUNNING FOG INDEX IS 11.79-----------------------------
