I've tried the counting activity and so far the students always enjoyed it.
Last year around Christmas time, I did a lesson on the song 'Oh Christmas tree' and taught the students how to sing it in sign language; they loved it so, so much. Most of the students remembered how to sign it and showed me at the beginning of this years' first term.
I've also done small A5 labels for the classroom and its objects - in English, German and some of the native languages. I get the students to help me with the labels, which they enjoy because they are in charge of the correct spelling ;) (I usually still google it afterwards to make sure the word are spelled correctly).

As I already said- I did have similar experiences in biology. I try to leave some words in different language than Croatian in my presentation. The pupils loved it. The idea of singing birthday songs in another language sounds also great to me, I will definitelly try to incorporate it. When we encounter some latin word i allways try to point out not only the translation on Croatina but another languages- Italian, Spanish or French which I speak. And then I ask the pupils about the same word on Geman as they learn it in school and I don't speak it- so it is a process of learning for me as well.

For example singing birthday songs, counting.
The most relevant strategy that I have already used was poetry and also brainstorming with different words from different countries and students with different ancestry would help the others fill in a board. It was really funny.
When we work with students with 17/18 it is even more interesting since they have a different level of understanding and they can go to other level by comparing gastronomy, customs, which elevates the the lesson itself and seduces learners to go the extra mile in relation to other languages.

I find Nell's ideas innovative and adecuate for her students´plurilingual context. I also like many of the ones everyone has posted. I particularly like( because I see them more plausible for my students' context) the ones related to the translation of words or short sentences, in songs-as MªJosé, Sandrine or Raluca said-or using Google translator-as Manuel said-or even in the creation of a mini-dictionary- as Christos mentioned. I guess my students would find it very difficult to engage in plurilingual projects or more complex activities such as poems or subtitling videos. I would like to do an activity which can be included in one of the units this term so as to be more meaningful for them. It is going to be related to "Looking after Pets", using three instructions which they can translate in Arabic and Romanian.

One lesson I often do with studets from different language backgrounds is to explain a recipe from their countries in English. Explain the ingredients ( they normally bring them physically or can show a photo). The method in their own language, showing it by demonstration and finally bringing it the fina result to the classroom. The real final product or a photo if is not possible to actually bring it into the classroom. They feel proud of showing a famous dish from their culture and love sharing it with their class!

I have always found dual language books to be very effective. In one highly multicultural school in the Ottawa area years ago we started a program called Hawthorne Writes. This meant that every person in the school was to write a non fiction story for a book compilation (staff included) and then there were many reading nights organized in different languages plus copies of stories on websites and relatives and friends around the world were invited to read online. It was great and was an expansion of the regular dual language writing. I think also having students compare the words of songs in more than one language based on a common theme is a good idea. Most important for me is to demonstrate the languages that are present in the school via bulletin boards etc - make it important looking as it really is!!

This work on representations the students have can be crucial as well, since without proper attitude and motivation there cannot be any successful learning or teaching.

If I had to plan classroom activities that incorporates linguistic diversity, making use of the concept of a language passport—as shown in the attached video—would be my first step, where knowing where each student is with their level of language awareness would help me with planning possible activities that can foster their curiosity with other languages. From there, whatever languages they know the best or whatever language(s) they want to improve on can be used in games and other active activities, where they will be able to add their progress onto their language passports and look at what they have accomplished throughout the semester. Examples of activities that can make use of a language passport include virtual field trips to World Heritage Sites as part of a history lesson, along with a multilingual re-enactment of a historical event based on what students have recently learned during their virtual field trip as apart of an arts-based curriculum.

—Austin Nicholas Dragoș [United States of America]

One more way of making other languages welcomed is, for example, making classroom news board where students can write what happened in school or class today in simple sentences in their own languages. Or cu articles from newspaper in various languages (same headlines, different languages).

I like to work with idioms and proverbs when there's an opportunity to bring some into the classroom. Idioms and proverbs are closely related to a country's own culture and way of living. The meaning can be similar but you cannot simply translate to understand them. For instance, the Portuguese idiom which in English means 'it's the last straw", in Portuguese is "é a última gota" (it's the last drop). Besides being a funny way of teaching new words, using native and foreign languages, while talking about habits and culture, it's great to show students that languages may be different but still we all have much in common.
