Lifting up Leadership for School Mental Health: Fall Provincial Leadership Meeting

This Fall Provincial School Mental Health Leadership Meeting will be held virtually, bringing together mental health leadership teams from across the province to set the stage for the year ahead. It is an opportunity to reinforce our collective vision and commitment to strengthen system, school and classroom leadership for the mental health and well-being of every student.

Focus areas will include updates from the Ministry of Education, strategic priorities for the year ahead and work related to Policy and Program Memorandum (PPM) 128, including an introduction to the SBIRT Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment for Substance Use Learning Series for SMH professionals.

The meeting will also provide an overview and updates on the following areas and resources designed to support the coordination and implementation of school board priorities for student mental health and well-being.

Virtual format did not favour many networking opportunities. These were the focus of the Regional Meetings that took place following the PLM. Opportunities to consult 'early' on Strategic planning as well as discussions re: Substance use prevention were appreciated.

And wondering about how we can hear how SBIRT, CAPSA modules, and the In-Person cross sectoral sessions have been implemented and/or part of their MH&A plan for the upcoming school year - learning from implementation facilitators and barriers

Highlights from Student Engagement Practice Exchange

This is an event planned for early spring for school and board staff to network and share examples of student engagement in mental health promotion and literacy initiatives. I wonder if there are ways to showcase some of these examples at PLM as well. It's another way of sharing the work and possibly the voices of other students across the province.

"Like" Boards, not regions

We regularly have boards feed back that they would like to be able to confer with boards that are facing a similar challenge. This does not map regionally (necessarily), but could be that one board from there that shares a structural challenge with that other board from way over that other way...

Team members need more time to get ready for PLM. The sooner themes are firmed up, the sooner the student and parent caregiver teams can plan for the inclusion of those voices in a meaningful way. Sooner the better.

Last year was described as a success in how young people were included in the day. The SE team has questions on the key themes of the PLM, and if student voice data (HNO) and newcomer students will be a focus, and if so, those are the voices we should hear from.

Getting clarity on what the focus will be and the expectation on portfolios will help team members better plan, and include students.

If we will share HNO data, how will we move this information forward in boards
- Questions like: what now? Why is this important? What does this have to do with me?
Finding a way to tie the HNO data to the strategy and/or board action planning can be a helpful way to gain future buy-in to HNO with school boards.
