In the late 1800's America shifted from farms and agriculture to factories and machining. This is due to inventions such as the assembly line that allowed items to be mass produced. This shift from agriculture to industry also brought people from rural areas in to urban areas and formed new cities. These urban areas presented new issues. But also opened it up to many opportunities

The Transcontinental Railroad was the first thing to connect the coasts. The railroad shortened travel time from 6 months to 6 days. With that, a new wave of immigrants started to travel to the Midwest. The Transcontinental Railroad also helped to complete American's sense of Manifest Destiny.

Carnegie was one of America's leading philanthropists. He helped build hundreds of libraries and donated millions of dollars. He also was the leading steel manufacturer of the time. This helped with the building of skyscrapers and better structures overall. This helped with what America wanted to do with buildings.

William McKinley, supported by big business and those in favor of keeping the gold standard. He brought people from all over America to his hometown of Canton, Ohio. He did this by use of the newer railroads scattered across the United States. McKinley being elected as POTUS also signified the beginning of the end for the Populist Party. Later in 1901 he sadly became the third president to be assassinated.

From this unit I learned what the Populist Party really was rather than just knowing they existed. I learned that they were the party favored by farmers. This is because they believed in fair work hours, wages, treatment, quality of work, and more. They helped to release the strangle of cost that railroads put on the farmers. Unfortunately the Populist Party didn't continue into modern times. But some of their ideas can be found in the modern Democratic Party.

My life can still connect with the Industrial Revolution because of some of the laws that were put in place because of it. For example, child labor laws were put in place, so I couldn't work as a child. Minimum wage was also put in place. This is still something that is used today, however it is much higher now than it was then.

One of the most interesting things I learned was that Carnegie was actually a well known philanthropist. Part of this was because I assumed that most business men were cruel and used dirty tactics to gain their wealth. I also found it interesting that Carnegie found different ways to give back to the community. One such way was by buildings hundreds of libraries.
