Invictus

In the poem Invictus, Henley describes himself as unconquerable and undefeated. He makes an inference in stanza one that darkness or more known as "adversity" has been challenging him. He has experienced so much, but he is the "captain" of his soul, and he is the "master" of his fate. The power that he holds in himself is in these previous statements. "For my unconquerable soul" and "My head is bloody but unbowed" shows us that he has used his fearlessness and his power to overcome his adversity. The power in the first stanza is corrupting. This other power we see is the adversity. This power can corrupt a man on different levels. The power that comes from man can be corruptible, but the way he is using it, it is not. Henley's traits are determination and being steadfast in the wake of his goal. This makes him powerful because he needs the determination to overcome these experiences, and being steadfast shows that he won't waiver when a trial tries to push him down.

Guilty Party

The guilty party starts out with a child being rejected by her father. She went and played in the streets where it is said that children should not be. When we have a time jump, you can see Kid Mullaly in a bar betting on him taking a different girl, one different from the one in the beginning, to a dance. He does just to make her bitter and to knock down her jealously. His plan was not full proof because she just becomes more jealous. She sees him at the dance and she stabs him. In result of this, she flees and drowns in a river. Time jumps yet again and it is at the courthouse. The guilty party turns out to be the father in the beginning. He was the one who caused all the pain she had. The father had the power to give her time. He had the power if making her stay in the house. Not only did her father have all of the power, her fiance did also. He controlled the situation jealousy. As of result, he made her go insane. He corrupted that power when he said he was going for jealousy of the heart. The overall factor was that the father held the power, yet he let her go into the street and learn things she should not have learned. Then Kid Mullaly embarrassed her and made her jealous. It ate her alive just as the river did at the end.

Peabody uses imagery through the senses of their flight. She states that Icarus splits the air as he flies as a swimmer does when swimming.First off, she uses a simile to show a comparison between the two. Also, she uses it as imagery to give us a real-life perspective because we have all swam. She also says the when villagers looked up and watched them swoop past the trees, they thought it was Cupid chasing Apollo. This gives us imagery because it shows us that they are flying fast. Also, the wings must be made good for them to look that of a god. She shows us that the wings were made well, the wings worked as expected, and they were fast. We can see, she made a lot of comparisons and she used a lot of imagery to convey what it looked like when they finally broke free to fly. Power is shown through knowledge. Daedalus has power of the mind. He was able to outsmart those of the prison and escape it. Though, his power was not corrupted by him, his son corrupted it. When they were flying, he got a little too high. Icarus' power controlled him and as of result, the wax melted off and he died.

Ozymandias who was Ramses had power, but his pride took over. He says he is the "King of Kings" and "Look on my works". Pride must come before fall. His power corrupted him. His power caused him to be a colossal wreck. Ozymandias' trait consists of pride. Though he once was a great King, his age and corruption of power took over anything and everything he had. He is a corrupted king seeking more power and only helping himself.

Typically the man of the household holds most of the power. In Lamb to the Slaughter, Patrick did; though, it was not to his benefit. Patrick told Mary that he no longer loves her. He betrayed her despite marriage. She was in disbelief. She continued to act as if nothing happened. She moved swiftly grabbing ingredients. This included the lamb leg. She came back to where they were once sitting and raised the leg behind him. She crashed the lamb leg on the back of his head. She controlled the situation. She had all the power. She let it corrupt her. Once she felt that power, her actions resulted from it. She allowed herself to do before she thought. Without thinking, she killed him and continued with her day as if nothing happened until she called the cops.

Master Jacob

The main motivation was trickery. They started out the passage by tricking Master Jacob. Little did they know, he would trick them all into death. He tricked the three rogues several times. Every time the rogues thought that they had figured it out, they would be duped again. "See now, they had been fooled twice already, and were not to be caught again." Since they thought they knew what was going to happen, they would do the opposite thing that Master Jacob had said, but in all reality, when Master Jacob told them not to go to the pit, it was true. If they would've listened, they would not have died. They had the power of trickery the first time, but their power corrupted because they let Master Jacob know what they had done. They always thought that they had the upper hand, but they did not. It led to their overall demise.

Macbeth

Macbeth and Lady Macbeth both let their power corrupt them. They found themselves at the point of insanity and absolute destruction of their human bodies. Lady Macbeth let her guilt reign over her mind, and she found herself in a detrimental state of mind. She was trying to hurt herself, and she eventually ended her own life. As for Macbeth, his guilt reigned over his mind, but then seemed to disappear once he was fighting the "enemy". Macbeth was the one who killed King Duncan directly. The blood he had on his hands tormented him for many days. He let the power of the witches get to him. Not only did he kill the king, he killed Banquo, Macduff's wife, and sons, and he killed many others along with them. Macbeth was drowning in blood, and he did not know how to control it. He regained his confidence (though it was corrupted) to fight Macduff. Once they fought, Macbeth died. Macduff avenged his family and his kingdom. Overall, power corrupted both of them. This led to their death. Their greediness and guilt left them for them as they were tormented by the hands of the witches.

When he sings, he is talking about some that used to have the upper hand. This man was once great and powerful, but not any more. "But that was when I ruled the world". He uses past tense verb form that this person abused some sort of power. He also says, "I know St Peter won't call my name" which means that he has obviously done something to upset a lot of people. In the first verse he states that the king was almighty and great, and time passes through the transition to the second verse stating they want his head on a silver plate. "Oh who would ever want to be king?". "People couldn't believe what I'd become". This states that he abused his power. He took what he once had and made everyone else upset. Power is easily corrupted when you are a King. You have all of the power. You can do anything, and in this song, he abuses it. This results in his downfall. "Oh who would ever want to be king?"
