Emily Hatcher teaches the vocabulary words before her students start reading the book, which helps the words stand out and makes the story easier to understand. I really like this approach because reading can be confusing when you don’t know what certain words mean. By going over the new vocabulary first, students can follow along better and stay more interested and engaged in what they’re reading.

The teacher goes through each vocabulary word and asks students what they think it means. She has them sound it out, then uses it in a sentence or situation so they can see how it’s used in context. Afterwards, she asks again what they think the word means. This approach really helps students understand the words better. I like how she gives them a chance to figure it out on their own first and then helps guide them. It makes learning feel more fun and hands-on.

I learned that the best ways to teach vocabulary include strategies that make students think more deeply about word meanings instead of just memorizing definitions. I like how these approaches encourage students to really interact with the words, like acting them out, drawing a picture, coming up with a symbol, or thinking of real-life examples. I think that when students make these kids of connections, they remember the words better because they're building a network of meanings, not just learning one definition at a time, like the guy said in the video.

In this video, noticed the teacher having the student relook at a word he wrote. He then figured out he spelt the word he wrote wrong. This video talks about the Matthew effect, where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. It can often be similar in learning, where the ones that get it keep making growth and the ones that don't understand don't make any growth. However, most times now in literacy this isn't always the case, the teacher builds a relationship and helps the students that are struggling.

Emily Hatcher, the teacher, teaches the vocabulary words beforehand and she also has the students do a movement that they choose to help each one of them individually connect with each term because not everyone has experience certain things. I like this approach because when a child can relate to something they will understand that something better. Also, with being up and moving the students are more engaged.

Ms. Casey, the teacher, shows the students each vocabulary word on an index card. She then shows each index card to the students, reads the card, and asks if they know the definition. The ones that the students didn't know, she used in a sentence instead of just giving them the definition, so they could still build their own idea. As she calls on each student, they just add more to the definition.

In the video, the teacher had the student take another look at a word he wrote, and the student realized he had spelled it incorrectly. The video talks about the Matthew Effect, which means that people who already have advantages keep gaining more, while those who struggle fall further behind. In education, this can happen when students who understand lessons keep learning and growing, while those who don’t get it struggle to make progress. However, in literacy today, teachers often step in by supporting and connecting with students who need extra help, so they don’t get left behind.

She has them sound it out and then uses it in a sentence or real-life example so they can see how it fits in context. Afterward, she asks again what they think the word means, allowing them to rethink their answers. This strategy helps students remember the words better and develop skills for figuring out meanings on their own. I like how she encourages them to try first before guiding them—it makes the activity more interactive, engaging, and helps build their confidence in learning new words.

She was having the student look back at missed words and was giving her the chance to sound out the words on her own before intervening and offering help or correcting her. I believe this builds confidence as well as a skill to do it on her own before relying on the teacher.

Emily Hatcher started the video by singing a song, and having the students match the word they were saying (parts of the insect) to an image to help gain a better understanding of what they were saying. A visual allows a better comprehension for students, especially those who prefer to learn with visuals versus words. This allows the students to match the term to its meaning. She also mentions how she addresses unfamiliar vocabulary words prior to reading them, that way students can be more familiar when they read the text and be able to see the term in context. I like this approach, I feel it allows for the children to connect vocabulary terms while also having fun. Kids love music and silly songs.
