My Dilemma

I am a teacher in person, but a kid at heart. I want my students to find fun in learning. I try to incorporate fun activities that will have my first graders engaged and inquisitive. Sadly, I also have six students diagnosed with ADHD in my classroom. As I teach or watch my mentor teacher, I always see many students off task. I feel as if most of my time is kept keeping my students on task. I am constantly walking around the room monitoring and having to touch desks, say students names, or giving students "the look" only for the students to continue right back to not paying attention. My mentor teacher and I provide quality lessons that are engaging, but are having trouble because we are always repeating statements due to our students poor attention spans. We have so many students that require one-on-one time and there is only two of teaching.

This week my mentor teacher told me to informally take over Science since I will be teaching that subject soon. I brought in different parts of plants that I gathered from the forest, a variety of seeds, and provided a plant diagram. The students were very interested in the parts of a plant I gathered along with the seeds. The students compared the seeds and made predictions of what would happen during the growing process. The students then filled out the plant diagram. My mentor teacher told me that she would not have brought in the plant parts and she praised me for a lesson well done.
