Greenock cemetery is a large site situated close to the centre of the town, which lies on the River Clyde. The War graves which are of both Wars are scattered and a Cross of Sacrifice erected beside the main cemetery road.

This is the Inverkip Street burial ground. It was opened in 1787 due to the great increase in the population of Greenock.

When first opened the population complained that it was too far from the centre of the Town and therefore difficult for funerals to take place.

At first all stone memorials had to be kept low to allow the carrying of coffins across the ground. All graves are numbered and laid out in rows e.g. a row of 20s then a row of 30s and so on. In 1846 the ground was levelled and many stones buried.

Could Inverclyde council work with Tesco on a redevelopment of their car park to make a more open and welcoming travel route that doesn’t feel like cutting through a supermarket? Or could inverclyde council work to make the pavement around Tesco more pleasant for pedestrians as to encourage people to utilise it and go around Tesco rather than though?

Could the area outside of the cruise terminal be redeveloped to create a more welcoming and exciting entrance to the town? Currently, when thousands of people depart from the cruises and walk out into Greenock, the first thing they see is a patch of land and a supermarkets car park in the distance. Could this empty site be used to create a new space that draws people into the town and also gives the residents of Greenock something new? The site could be used to build a new food vendor space with multiple small units and a big communal seating area (indoor and outdoor) similar to esf in Edinburgh. Or it could be redeveloped into a Green space that can host farmers markets and outdoor events rather than just sitting as empty land.

This building gives a perfect opportunity for a redevelopment. With tons of parking, direct waterfront access and a hotel next door, it easily has potential to be used for leisure and/or retail instead of laying empty as an unused call centre.
