During the Cold War the United States and the Soviet Union created a nuclear arms race. Both countries spent billions of dollars trying to build huge amounts of nuclear weapons. The Cold War came to a close because the Soviet Union's economy was crippling. They were spending all their money on nuclear weapons causing their economy to be unbalanced with hardly any food. The Cold War lasted until the signing of the Conventional Forces in Europe treaty of November 1990.
