Both countries spent billions of dollars trying to build huge amounts of nuclear weapons. The Cold War came to a close because the Soviet Union's economy was crippling. They were spending all their money on nuclear weapons causing their economy to be unbalanced with hardly any food. The Manhattan Project was top secret, even Vice President Truman didn't learn about it until he became president. However, Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin's spies were so good, he knew all about it.

The US B-52 bomber could fly 6,000 miles and deliver a nuclear bomb.

It is estimated that by 1961 there were enough nuclear bombs built to destroy the world.

Both sides created so many nuclear weapons that a ability to launch a devastating attack even after a full assault from the other side could occur. This became known as Mutual Assured Destruction. Both sides knew that any attack upon the other would also be devastating to themselves, causing them to not attack each other.

These countries include The United Kingdom, China, and France.

In 1952 the United Kingdom was the third country to have an atomic bomb because of Operation Hurricane.
France became the fourth country to have nuclear weapons on February 13, 1960, when the atomic bomb Gerboise Bleue was detonated in Algeria.
China became the fifth country to have nuclear weapons on October 16, 1964 when it detonated a 25 kiloton uranium-235 bomb in a test named Lop Nur.
