The LIT Club selected Censorship as our first book club theme in preparation for Banned Books Week this October, a national event that celebrates the freedom to read and raises awareness about the impact of censorship on individuals and communities.

This theme reflects our club’s mission to support intellectual freedom, encourage open dialogue, and promote access to diverse voices and ideas. At the heart of our club is the belief that everyone deserves the right to explore, question, and learn without restriction.

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

I chose this book mainly because I have not read it before and it was collecting dust on my bookshelf. However, for a more elegant (and still truthful) answer, I am fascinated by how activists used it as a symbol for women's reproductive rights, and I hope to check out the show on Hulu afterwards :)

Horror!

In honor of Halloween, we’re leaning into the shadows. The LIT Club chose Horror because it’s more than jump scares; it’s a mirror for the fears and anxieties of each era and place. We hope to reflect on what makes a book scary. Is it atmosphere, ambiguity, the unreliable narrator, isolation, the supernatural vs. the psychological, or the way a story taps into cultural anxieties? There's so much to unpack with this theme so we can't wait to see everyones pick and their thoughts on their chosen book.

Red Dragon by Thomas Harris

I'm a huge fan of Hannibal the TV series, which is a queer retelling of Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. I chose this book because I'm curious to learn about the original source of my favorite show and compare the two :) It's the first book of the Hannibal Lecter series. A lot of people assume the first book is The Silence of the Lambs (which I also can't wait to read), but that comes after this one. I also chose this book because I looove a good psychological horror.

The Night Guest - Hildur Knútsdóttir

Honestly, I originally was going to choose Frankenstein, but it was hard to get through just reading the letter portion of the book because my brain was too fried from reading academic journal articles and textbook chapters nearly everyday.

And so, I settled on The Night Guest because the language made it easy for me to read through to the point that I was able to read 20 pages in 5 minutes.

It's so very close to the niche genre I'm looking for that MAYBE if I bring it up, someone at LIT club will recommend a book that'll help me complete my quest.

Neuromancer by William Gibson

Neuromancer established the cyberpunk genre. I love sci-fi so it holds a special place in my heart for being a foundational part of the genre. Also the themes that the book explore are more prevalent than ever with the rise of AI.

The Happy Writer

Aloha! I wanted to read something to lighten up the mood. While writing can be both exciting and daunting, Marissa, author of The Happy Writer, provides fun ways she incorporates into her writing process. To me, it's also a great way to dig into the author's mind, since she is a professional writer. We don't have to be tortured souls to write something profound! While I know that to be true, I'm still inspired by the quote, " Write drunk, edit sober," another interesting way to dig up unfiltered thoughts buried in my brain, that is, unless I lie flat on my face with ink stains first. Marissa shares her happy playlist of songs that keep her motivated. Of course, I copied her! Anyway, to great writing and to keep staying inspired!

I don't recall ever completing a Toni Morrison book. I know she's a wonderful writer, and it helps to gather inspiration from everywhere. I'm pretty excited about this and the great theme for February!

Thought this would be an interesting read since it has some commentary on advanced technology and the ethics behind it! Very relevant to our current age, especially with the rise in AI technology in recent years.

One Hundred Years of Solitude

First, the green caught my attention, and it is one of my favorite colors. This will be my second book this year that has a green cover. The word "solitude" pretty much sold it to me as well. So, here's to great reading!!

Small Worlds - Caleb Azumah Nelson

I have heard a lot of good things about this book. As I navigate college life, I’m drawn to uplifting coming-of-age stories; they give me a lot of hope. Also, a majority of the novel is set during the summer season, and with summer break right around the corner, I thought this was a great way to kick things off.
