Students may have multiple entry points into the problems, but when faced with "unknowns" (strategies, skills, what the question is asking) they may shut down. Students need practice with these types of tasks and utilizing what they have/know- understanding that there are multiple ways to address the same prompt, teachers need to explicitly teach how to approach the prompts.

When I read students' sample work, I saw many students just explained without presenting specific numbers/percent. That's why many students earned 1 point, not 2 points. I think that is because students do not understand the word "explain any mathematics" clearly.

How could it be different/ clear for students to answer better?
