I think a successful leader will make people want to follow. They will contribute their own value to make followers enjoy what they are doing, and know what to do. In order to determine my vision, I need to know myself. I need to know what I can contribute to my followers and the company that I work for. A good leader shows what to do, and make people want to work for him or her. I want to be a kind of leader who make people want to work with me and support me. As well, they will be inspired by what I showed them. I want to be an adaptable leader who has corresponding ways to deal with different situations. Daft (2015, p. 442) stated that the core values for an adaptable leader are experimentation and autonomy. From the interview that I did in this course, I learned from the interviewee that, some times the way she wants to lead followers does not work. She needs to figure out new ways to lead the whole team. There is no ‘one-fits-all’ approach to leadership, and instead of using a monotonous style of leadership and a strict outline, a leader should be flexible enough to try new ways of leading their followers. In addition, being adaptable allows me as a leader to become creative. I can think out of the box, and get more ideas in order to work with my co-workers and followers better to maximize my value.

Second, I will find different ways to lead different projects. For instance, I like to let my team members figure out the outline themselves before every meeting, and brainstorming during the meeting. However, I find that some team members will not look at the outline prior the meeting. They will wait for you to tell them what is expected on each team work. Hence, sometimes I will have a meeting for clarifying to let all team members know what are we going to do for the assignments. After that, every one is on the same page, and they can go home and do research. If I get a chance to lead a project, I have trouble with giving tasks to other members. Sometimes it is hard for me to delegate duties. For example, throughout the study at Royal Roads University, there are many team work have to be done. There was one time we need to make a video for our marketing campaign, I personally think I am good at making videos, so I volunteered to make the video. However, that ended up with I did not have enough time for my individual assignment. Therefore, I can not get enough time to sleep, but a bad mark on my individual one instead. Daft (2015, p241) stated that, “empowerment can enhance motivation by meeting the higher-level needs of employees.” Followers like to follow those leader who know how to empower because they know they are needed.

We can work as a team to make it better than I finish it by myself. Most of the time, people will feel more than happy to help you finish tasks. It is a learning process. Even if they do not know how to do certain thing, I can teach them to let them finish it. They will then feel the sense of achievement. Other than team work, I will also help my team members develop in terms of their personal life. Before, people like to ask me for help because I barely delegating works to others. They think I am reliable, and just ask me for help. I will help them most of the times no matter what without saying “no”.
