German unification in 1871 was the process that led to the establishment of the German Empire under Prussian leadership. Driven by Otto von Bismarck's political strategies and realpolitik, unification involved a series of wars against Denmark, Austria, and France. The victory in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) galvanized German nationalism and united the various German states. On January 18, 1871, the German Empire was officially proclaimed in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles, with King Wilhelm I of Prussia becoming its first emperor. This unification marked a significant shift in European power dynamics and laid the groundwork for future conflicts on the continent.

Italian unification, or the Risorgimento, culminated in 1861 with the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy. Key figures like Giuseppe Garibaldi, Count Camillo di Cavour, and King Victor Emmanuel II played crucial roles in this movement to unite various independent states and territories. The unification process involved a series of military campaigns and diplomatic efforts, including Garibaldi's Expedition of the Thousand, which successfully captured Sicily and Naples. Despite the proclamation of the kingdom, significant regions, like Rome and Venetia, remained outside its borders until later. The unification reshaped the political landscape of Italy and marked a significant milestone in the broader context of 19th-century nationalism in Europe.
