People were proud of their heritage. They wanted their music to sound like its country of origin. Folk songs are often incorporated to large works.

Harmony + Tonality

The rules of harmony were stretched and soon ignored. Composers strayed so far away from the idea of a major minor tonality system and eventually...it snapped. That's 20th Century music tho. Naught to worry about here.
