1. My background in education is mainly secondary. I was a paraprofessional for 4 years within the Rochester Public School District while I attended Augsburg University to become a special education teacher and have an Academic Behavior Strategist (ABS) K-12 teaching license. I then went back to Bethel University to get my Work Based Learning Teacher Coordinator License endorsement. I am a fourth year special education teacher and am in my second year as the Work Based Learning Teacher Coordinator at a transition program for students ages 18-21 called Rochester Academy for Independent Living which is within the Rochester Public School District. I service between 55-60 students at this time. It is a lot of work but it has been my dream job since day 1.
2. I became interested in working with students with learning disabilities through working at a company called ARSYS (A Road to Support Yourself) where I assisted adolescence with disabilities in building various skills. This lead me to becoming a special education para through the work that I loved and enjoyed in working within that company!
3. One of my Teach with your Strengths themes included "Achiever" as #2. This connects to my instructional strategies and your work in education in that I use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in my classroom as my strategy in the way that the student learns and achieves based on their background knowledge, being able to have various modes of presenting the information, including everyone in the way that they learn best, as well allow the student to show their achievement in my learning objectives in whatever way works for them whether it be drawing a picture, creating a kahoot or collage, verbalizing it, writing it, etc. I never let my students give up and use growth mindset phrases and SEL as well as lot in my classes. I share the same philosophy and have always had the mindset that I am not a quitter no matter how hard my life gets or what gets thrown my way- this is the same instruction/attitude/philosophy I give to my students.
