Le Giec a publié son premier rapport (First Assessment Report) en 1990. Son cinquième rapport de synthèse (AR5) est paru en 2016, le sixième en mars 2023 (AR6). À chaque publication, le Giec communique des projections climatiques fondées sur des hypothèses de concentration de GES.

Pour l’AR5, quatre profils d’évolution des concentrations de GES (RCP, pour Representative Concentration Pathways) ont été définis : RCP2.6 ; RCP4.5 ; RCP6.0 ; RCP8.5, du plus optimiste au plus pessimiste, nommés d’après la valeur du forçage radiatif induit à l’horizon 2100 (pour le RCP8.5, le forçage radiatif s’élève à 8.5 W/m2).

Un cinquième profil plus optimiste a été élaboré plus récemment par la communauté scientifique : le RCP1.9. Il a été défini dans le cadre du rapport spécial du Giec sur les conséquences d’un réchauffement global de 1,5 °C, paru en 2018, et en 2023.
