For North Carolina Standards, at the end of 1 year of Spanish classes, students should be at the next level above Novice Low, which is Novice Mid, in all areas except one.

When I was in my Intro to Spanish I class in my undergraduate studies, my Spanish professor did an activity with us that allowed us to experience hands-on, real-world learning. She set up a "market" in our classroom. Each student had a grocery list with pictures of the items we needed to purchase. Next, we had to ask the merchant if they had that item in stock, ask the price of the item, ask the total cost of our items, pay for the items, all while engaging in basic conversation. This helped us to see how to use Spanish in a real-life situation, and I have never forgotten this experience. I started regularly shopping at the Spanish market in town after this class experience because I had the confidence to be able to engage in basic interpersonal conversation. Instead of a written test, I would have various scenarios set up around the classroom. Students would be provided the scenario, then they would have to use their knowledge of vocabulary and their speaking skills to guide me through their chosen scenario. By opting to have an oral/presentation-style assessment, students can focus on the practicality and real-world usage of the content instead of stressing over learning content to simply pass a test.

My advisor during my undergraduate studies started every lesson with a song in Spanish. The songs would be from different genres, including more Spanish-dominated genres, such as cumbia, and would feature artists from various Spanish-speaking countries. This song is from a group from Argentina, and this song is about Buenos Aires. By providing us with a variety of music throughout each course, the students got to see similarities and differences in music from various countries. This helped me to really connect with the content, since my minor was in music. This also demonstrates to students how even if we can not understand every single detail, there will always be ways to understand people regardless of language knowledge. By using student interests, students will become more engaged. (Side note: I searched for this band's live album when I studied abroad in Argentina, and it is a regularly listened to album in my car.)

This movie touches on a the cultural celebration of Dia de Los Muertos, Day of the Dead. I would show this movie in Spanish (English Subtitles). By allowing my students to see a movie that they are probably familiar with in its native tongue, they will start to make the connection between the language, music, and celebration in a more authentic setting. I would do this lesson in late October, leading up to November 1st, which is Dia de Los Muertos.

My high school Spanish teacher used this cheesy video to help us learn the countries and capitals of South America in Spanish. This song still lives rent-free in my head 9 years later. Even if I did not get my bachelor's degree in Spanish, I would still remember this song. This is a wonderful example of how to make facts "stick" by using music and repetition.

First Class Meeting - Learning the Spanish Alphabet

The first step to learning any language is learning the alphabet and how it is pronounced. This is the exact video my high school Spanish teacher used for my Spanish I class. By using a video that is bilingual, it will help to eliminate some anxiety students may have about learning a new language. An introductory Spanish class should start off more bilingual and slowly move towards being completely in the target language.

This lesson plan is from the Cervantes school. I have attended two Cervantes-associated schools in two different Spanish-speaking countries. This program is considered the peak of Spanish language-learning excellence. By allowing students to see what is being taught at prestigious programs such as this one, students can start to develop confidence in themselves and in their ability to learn a new language.
