She was doing this as a favor but, then realized that the way the prisons were run was awfule. She saw people in small cages and children in jail with adults. There was not a lot of food also the cells were crowded. Most of the people were in prison for not paying of there debts. The worst of it was that the mentally ill were being beaten  for acting out. So she put up mental hospitals and made special prisons for children. They said that it caused mental illness,crime, and the breaking up of families. In 1820 they started the Temperance movement. This banned the sell and use of alcohol. Main was the first state then others followed.
