Martha is leaving her kitchen a mess because the sheriff needs her help. Martha opens the door and notices its very cold, so she runs back into her home for a coat, her husband gets impatient and tells her not to keep the folks waiting in the cold. She gets in with 3 men and 1 women in the buggy. Mr. Hale gets asked by the county attorney what happen yesterday when he came in yesterday morning. Mr. Hale didn't being at once and he looked almost as if what he had seen there yesterday morning made him almost sick. Mr. Hale want to see Mr. Wright, but when he goes inside the house, he sees his wife instead. Mrs. Wright tells him he is dead. Mr. Hale not knowing what to say asks Mrs. Wright how he died, she says a rope around his neck. She says this with a straight face acting calm pleating’ at her apron. The women notice unusual things, like a an empty bird cage (both do not remember if Mrs. Wright had a bird or not), and the door to the cage with a broken hinge which was pulled apart, as if someone got "rough" with it. They decided to take the quilt to Mrs. Wright, but end up finding a bird wrapped in silk, as if someone wrung it's neck. (Like how Mr. Wright was killed) They talk about how lively Minnie Foster was, and compare it to Mrs. Wright now, which is the opposite. They believe that Mr. Wright did not want the bird (killed it), which drove Mrs. Wright to kill him.
