This shows readers that Alan is naive and will believe anything he is told to do, and will give into his temptations. It also reveals how the old dude tricks his customers into buying the $1 potion, by describing how amazing the potions are. Then he has tricked them enough to come back another time and buy the expensive $5000 potion for his own profit. It seems like a devious scheme.
