The first of which was working at Floyds Knobs Elementary School. I along with many others were offered the opportunity to go earn community service hours by helping work at a sort of field day that the elementary school was having. The idea was that you were chosen, because of the sport you play or other activity you do, to help teach young kids what and how. In my case this was soccer. I along with three other classmates were given this task not knowing much of what to do at all. Practically as soon as we got in to the school we had a group of kids waiting to play soccer. These kids ages ranged anywhere from second to fourth grade. Together we put together a couple drills for them to do or games for them to play. Some of the kids had a lot of fun, some just wanted to play kickball, and some just wanted to sit and do nothing while the other kids played. We went through about 6 or 7 groups of kids throughout the course of the day, all differing from each other in their own way. 
For the other part of my community service, me and a couple of my friends went and volunteered at Open Door Youth Shelter. This is basically a place for kids to stay when they can’t be taken care of or need help. One of the first things that we had to do was clean out the pantry and freezer. This meant taking out expired foods and throwing them away, unboxing foods to make them easier to find, and reorganizing/regrouping all the products. The other thing we did is we scrubbed the floors and walls in the kitchen. As they were about to paint the walls they needed to be cleaned first.

Through the course of the day I learned a lot of patience. The gym was set at a very high temperature as I was sweating the whole time, many kids wouldn’t listen to us, many kids wouldn’t understand what we were trying to tell them, and many kids were bratty and emotional. I also learned how to take responsibility and leadership in teaching these kids the sport of soccer. One of the main things that they taught me is that I never want to have kids. During the second part of my community service I also learned a couple things. I will openly admit that I have been privileged my whole life by the fact that I haven’t worked much of a job ever. Doing hard labor teaches you morals. As me and my friends were on our knees scrubbing the floors of a kitchen it made me realize how grateful I am. The kitchen that I am referring to is at a youth center where these kids aren’t spending time with their parents or living their best life. As far as the community service goes I do think it’s a good idea. Although, while I think that seniors should be required to put in hours, I do not think that there is a reason they should have to right a sort of report on it and then give a presentation. I feel good about the community service I did as I believe it helped many kids have fun at Floyds knobs elementary. I also feel good that I got to help the kids and staff in some way at the youth center and that is a very hard place to be and work.
