Through collaborative construction of success criteria, not only students gain a clear understanding of the learning target(s), but they also become part of the process and thus comprehend and retain skills. It's like seeing a finished baked cake and try to figure out how to make it. It will not happen if you don't start experimenting and putting the ingredients together until you make a cake yourself.

I always like to create the success criteria with the students so they understand the purpose of the learning target and understand the steps they need to take to be successful.

It is important to purposefully plan your lessons. Creating learning targets and success criteria with your students can help them reach the target of the lesson. The students can revisit the success criteria throughout the lesson and know the steps they need to take to reach that goal/target.

I've been implementing this technique with the students since the beginning of the year. I've seen the students make incredible growth. In the beginning of the year, they needed a lot of guidance doing this. Now, students are participating more in the processes of creating the success criteria. During independent work periods, I've heard other students explaining the success criteria to their partner to help them reach their learning target.
