Finally, I learned that when both plates shoot upward in a collision, gravity weighs it down so the mountain cannot rise too high.

A earth quake starts from underground rock pressure that suddenly shifts, it vibrates and creates a earthquake. Volcanoes start from molten rock that can rise through the Earth's crust and form a volcanic mountain. Then an opening comes through the crust which molten rock, gases, and other materials erupt, and creates a vent. The ocean has many rock forms as well such as continental shelf, continental slope, continental rise, abyssal plain, mid-ocean ridge, seamount and a trench. Starting at the continental shelf will vary in size, its a sloping underwater edge. I also learned that the continents move 2.5 cm a year!

Today in class I learned about earths plates. I learned that there are about 14 main plates on earth. I also learned that plates are always moving; and that some plates will move 2.5 centimeters a year while others will move 15 centimeters per year. This was very interesting because once all the continents were altogether (Pangea) and now they are 6000 km apart. One thing I found interesting is that earths plates are moved by the mantle beneath the crust. How fast the plates move all depends on how fast the flow of rock is beneath them. I was also able to learn about plate boundaries and how they are classified.

I learned that scientist use seismic waves to tell whats in Earth's interior. First, they measure how the speed of the wave, where the wave goes that how they know what Earths interior looks like. Then, using this meathod they learned that there are more then one layer of Earth, there are actually 4. Finally, each layer is neighbooring the layer beneath it! This packet had many interesting things to learn but I thought that this was pretty interesting.
