Jean Louise, back in Maycomb, flashes back to talking with her Aunt Alexandra about staying home when Jem first died. Jean Louise seems to have a deeper understanding of her father and family, rather than Aunty's thoughts of what the town would think or what is supposed to happen. This relates to the present, as Alexandra tells Jean Louise that Hank is not fit to wed Jean Louise because of the social hierarchy and where the Finches stand over the Clinton name and what people in Maycomb would say in result of their marriage.

Characterization of Jean Louise

Indirect: "Now that Jean Louise was grown, they had never been able to sustain fifteen minutes' conversation with one another without advancing irreconcilable points a view, invigorating friendships, but in close blood relations producing only uneasy cordiality." 26-27. This not only explains that Jean Louise is a very loud, opinionated person, but the reader can also infer that because Alexandra is such a traditional, classic lady of her time, Jean Louise is more progress pron and that is why they do not get along. In fact, the reader could relate back to TKAM, and see that Jean Louise's views compare to Scout's views very nicely. Jean Louise's perspective has only grown Scout's views and thoughts more and more, as now instead of being a tomboy, Jean Louise is now an independent women: which is only a more grown up version of her childhood self. It shows that in compare to TKAM the Jean Louise character has not changed into someone other than what the audience knows as her.

Hank takes Jean Louise out to dinner, where she sees the towns renewal, as most of it has been redone after WWII; Scout doesn't like it and it contrasts her childhood memories. Hank and Jean Louise talk about relationships and their views collide as almost opposite perspectives, but the chapter ends as Hank shows a small, but great interest and affection to Jean Louise; the reader can infer that it sets her back and makes her think deeper of Hank as she thinks about it after he says so.

Jean Louise continues to contrast her childhood times and her present times in Maycomb, she begins a flashback of one of her trouble-making memories with child jem and dill, who are now dead and halfway across the world. Then when Hank and her reach the Finch Landing, again her childhood world and her present one, collide but do not match up; the landing has been sold and they would now be considered trespassing on someone elses property. Jean Louise and Hank hop in and out of deep conversation as they constantly switch from childish to serious. They end up in the Landing river, which draws back to her childhood again, but this time compares instead of contrasting.
