TECH/522 - Technology Integration for Educators
Daniel Pace
April 30, 2018
This padlet was created for an 8th grade ELA inclusion class that has 11 students with individualized education plans. Nine of these students are served under the category of specific learning disability for deficits in their reading skills, most notably, reading comprehension. One of the others is served under the category of other health impairment for a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The other is served under the category of autism. These students also have struggles individually with their overall reading skills. The rest of the students in the class are a mixture of different types of learners, and their performance varies. Some do really well, while others are average, while others are really low performers mostly due to effort. The Quizziz assignment was created to help those students who need a little extra practice with their comprehension skills. It is also a very visual tool, which is also fun. Some of them treat the Quizziz like a contest, others just want some extra practice on a medium other than in a book or a sheet of paper.

Your new assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to come up with a new cast of actors and actresses to play in a movie remake of The Outsiders. Write 1-2 sentences explaining each casting choice you make. Use all of the tools at your disposal, especially Google. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. We will collaborate at the end to make the ultimate cast as a whole class.

The Outsiders Edpuzzle Think-Pair-Share Activity

Multimedia and Planning Integration
TECH/522 - Technology Integration for Educators
Daniel Pace
May 7, 2018
Your next assignment on The Outsiders can be found on Google Classroom (our class code is 65zp1l). The assignment is on Edpuzzle and is a short clip from The Outsiders movie. With the clip are questions, some of which are based on your own opinion. After watching the clip and forming your own answers, you will partner up with one of your peers and share your responses. To conclude the activity, the class will reconvene and our pairs will be given the opportunity to share their conversations and decisions. You may use The Outsiders novel to help you with your responses. The movie clip covers a portion of the book from chapters 8-9, pages 126-143. Try to recognize ways in which the novel differs from the movie. If you see anything that sticks out, write it down in your notebook. ALSO, SHARE WITH YOUR CLASSMATES!
This is a student centered activity because the students will write and discuss their ideas with a partner before sharing them with the larger group. This format gives students the opportunity to thoughtfully respond to questions in written form and to engage in meaningful dialogue with their peers about these issues. This activity is also a helpful way to give students time to compose their own ideas before sharing with them with the class. The Think, Pair, Share strategy helps students build confidence, encourages greater participation, and often results in more thoughtful discussions within the classroom. The teacher also serves as a facilitator of the activity, but the students are discussing their own thoughts and ideas.

We will be creating a Popplet mind map as a class for The Outsiders, which will include various forms of information on the author, settings, greasers, and Socs. I will have this activity projected onto the Promethean ActivBoard. We will add to this visual organizer as we move from activity to activity, including the Edpuzzle assignment, especially in regards to Darry and how he possibly could have been a Soc. When we are finished building the mind map, I will share the Popplet with you digitally or in print form so that you can use it to review for the upcoming assessment. You will also have the opportunity to create your own Popplet for a character of your choosing. The link below is to an example of a character Popplet for Steve Randle, one of the greasers. Have fun and be CREATIVE!

You will be considering and answering several critical thinking questions, creating a Facebook page template about main characters from the story in today's world, and summarizing what would've happened at key points in the novel if it took place in 2018. The Google Slides presentation below contains of the components needed to fully complete the project, including links to the Facebook page template, the grading rubric, and examples already completed by a fellow student. You may choose to work on your own if you would like, or as part of a group (2-3 students per group).
