The chart illustrates the number of criminals that four distinct countries imprisoned in the period from 1930 to 1980.

Overall, Great Britain and the United States experienced an increase in the figure of prisoners in the given period, while there was a significant decrease in Australia and New Zealand's prisoners. Notably, although both the New Zealand and US started at similar points, United States continually dominated as the leading country owning the high level of imprisonment throughout 50 years.

In the first year of the period, the initial number of criminals imprisoned in NewZealand and Australia was quite remarkable, with the respective figure of 30 thousand and 70 thousand. Between 1930 and 1950, the figure for both of them simultaneously fell to a low in 1950, at 45 thousand and 50 thousand, before reaching the same level of imprisionment in 1950, at nearly 90 thousand. From 1970 onwards, the figure for Australia then decreased significantly, halving from 90 thousand to 45 thousand, whereas a slight increase of 15 thounsand was seen in the number of criminal imprisioned in New Zealand of that year.

From 1930 to 1940, America and Great Britain shared the same starting number of prisoners, with both at 100 thousand in the initial year, before suddenly reaching 130 thousand in 1940. Over the next 40 years, there was a steady increase which could be seen in the number of prisioners, from 50 to 82 thousand in the end of the period. Notably, during the period from 1930 to 1970, there was a wild fluctuation between 130 thousand and 90 thousand in the number of prisioners, but the trend was upward overall. By 1980, it stood at about nearly 140 thousand.
