(Doing a Good Job)
1 - Knowledge Base
The reference librarian should not try to provide information he/she is not competent to provide. Keeping current is an ethical obligation to provide the highest level of service.
Reading journals and blogs, attending conferences, webinars, and workshops are some ways of keeping current.

2 - Collaboration
Reference librarians should collaborate with colleagues, users, and individuals and entities outside the library to increase their effectiveness.

3 - Equitable Access
The time spent with users should be proportional to their needs and the benefits they receive from the interaction. It does not mean each user receives the same amount of time with the librarian.

4 - Outreach
Effective outreach helps users to realize the nature of the services and resources available to them. Outreach methods may include: lectures, programs, classroom visits, social media, posters, mailings, and press conferences.

5 - Evaluation and Assessment
Librarians need to assess the effectiveness and necessity of library instruction and reference services.
Reference service done by librarians also need to be assessed through the use of mystery shoppers of videotaping. Librarians should be involved in the formation of assessment rubrics to better prepare for their assessments.

Equal access to library services and resources means that everyone has the right to unlimited access to library resources, regardless of who they are, their status, where they live or their income.
Barriers to equity of access do exist and they may be personal, institutional, or societal.
Librarians cannot service all users equally, but they must try to do so fairly. Awareness of special needs of people with disabilities and users from other cultures is a must.
Technology has decreased some kinds of inequity, but has created new forms of it. Not all users have Internet access or computers at home, or they may not know how to use them.
Charging fees should be avoided because not all people can afford to pay them which creates a form of inequality.
The Library Bill of Rights provides several guidelines for services regarding equitable access and intellectual freedom.
