1. We found that there was a lot of new infrastructure, as well as a decent amount of street art. Slowly its becoming more modern, with production work and contemporary shops. We feel upset about the fact that many of the old buildings have been destroyed, which is unfortunate as they really bring out the history of Cubitt St.

2. We believe Charlie would be proud of how far Cubitt St has come in a century, and how the people have Cremorne have tried to salvage the history of the area.

3. A negative highlight is the fact that the town has destroyed so many of the traditional architecture.

Dimmeys was designed by the prominent architects H W & F B Tompkins and built in stages between 1907 and 1918 and extended in 1986. It originated in a two-storey drapery store on the corner of Swan and Green Streets built in 1878 by Joseph Britten, whose family had run a drapery store in the area since 1853. This was purchased in 1898 by Dimelow & Gaylard, a drapery firm from Maryborough, and in 1904 it was taken over by John Jeffery, who retained the by-then colloquial name Dimmeys. The original store suffered fire damage in 1906, and in 1907 a new steel-framed building designed by the Tompkins brothers was built by Robert McDonald. It retained the narrow 1878 facade on Swan Street but had a new American Romanesque facade along Green Street. In 1910 Jeffery began a rebuilding program, with the extension of the store to the west in the same style as the Green Street facade, and also the construction of the clock tower, and he also changed the name to Dimmeys Model Stores, to reflect its high-fashion status. The globe on top of the tower was then clad with ruby glass (replaced in 1939 with copper) with 'Dimmeys' written on it. This was lit from inside and was visible for miles. The store was extended further along Swan Street in c1915 and c1918, when Jeffery also replaced the front facade of Britten's 1878 store. This resulted in uniform facades extending 39 metres along Swan Street and 67 metres along Green Street. The store sold a wide variety of merchandise on the ground floor, and on the first floor were workshops and the mail order service for regional customers. During the depression the store began to focus on quality goods at reduced prices, and in the post-war period it ceased manufacturing and became one of the most prominent bargain stores in Melbourne. The cast iron verandahs on Swan Street were removed in 1959. In the 1960s the Roman numerals on the clock faces were replaced with the letters DIMMEYSSTORE, and the cladding around the interior iron columns, the timber service counters and the original pneumatic cash system were removed. The original walk around display windows were removed in 1970. In 1986 Dimmeys acquired another store to the west, and extended the store to Byron Street in a similar style to the original. The company collapsed in 1996 and was sold, but there are still about twenty Dimmeys stores throughout Victoria. In 2004 the local artist Hayden Dewar was commissioned to paint a series of murals representing the history of the store and of Victoria since 1853 along the Green Street facade.

Dimmeys is a two storey brick American Romanesque style building, with arched Romanesque windows on the first floor of the long facades along Swan and Green Streets. The main feature is the four level clock tower, which is a local landmark. On each side of the top of the tower are four clock faces with the Roman numerals now replaced by the letters DIMMEYS STORE, and the name DIMMEYS is also painted on the four balconies below. At the top of the tower is a dome, supported on decorative arches above the clock faces, and this is surmounted by a large copper globe. There is now a cantilevered verandah on Swan Street, but a cast iron verandah has been added to the 1986 brick addition on the west end of the store. Large modern plate glass windows have replaced the original display cases on the ground floor. Much of the Swan Street facade and the tower have been painted.

How is it significant?

Dimmeys is of architectural and historical significance to the state of Victoria.

Why is it significant?

Dimmeys is of architectural significance as a fine, intact and early example of the American Romanesque style in Victoria and of the work of the prominent architects H W & F B Tompkins. Its significance is increased by the tower which is a prominent and well-known Melbourne landmark. In 1997 Dimmeys was ranked first in the Age newspaper's Melbourne Icons series.

Dimmeys is of historical significance as an example of the many large department stores which were built in the suburbs of Melbourne during the pre-WWI retail boom following the 1890s depression. Its changing status from a once-fashionable department store to a prominent bargain store reflects the changing fortunes of Melbourne's inner suburbs during the twentieth century.

Eliza: Interesting Fact: when the first European people came to the Yarra they mentioned this place near the Aqauriam called a reef of rock. But it was also incredibly important as well because you could go a meter below the waterfall and the water would be salty and brackish and they would drink the water form the waterfall and the water was completely fresh water that you’d be able to bend down and drink.
Chloe: So the name was based totally on a misunderstanding as well and again that’s what the walk that we do walk and be wrong is all about it’s trying to break down some of those misunderstandings, not only about the culture and the people but break down some of those misunderstandings about the place as well and it’s very important you.

As I stepped up to the starting line the butterflies in my stomach fluttered faster and faster. The Starting whistle sounded, a piercing shriek in my ear. My heart beated in time with my footsteps, pounding on the pavement. As I dashed around the streets, I looked down at my feet and realised I had no hope winning this wearing my fathers old boots. Even though I knew I couldn't win that wasn't going to stop me from trying. I was running with the wind, faster then I had ever run before. As I neared the final destination I spotted Barlow ahead of me and I knew it was now or never. I ran with all my might to catch up with Barlow and I succeeded. I felt a wave of accomplishment as I Crossed the finish line ahead of Barlow.

The former Bryant and May Industrial Complex in Richmond is a superb, largely intact Edwardian factory complex. The existing complex was built in 1909 to a design by William Pitt. The builder was Clements Langford. A further section was added behind it in 1910 and in 1917 a dining hall was constructed. The machinery for the factory was made in the USA, but none of it survived. A further building program in 1921-22 included the western extension of the factory, a new chimney stack and boiler house, and offices and Brymay Hall, all designed by Klingender and Hamilton. The builder for the extension was T. Donald and Co. The 1909 offices
were extended in 1934 by Arthur and Hugh Peck, architects. The 1920s saw the introduction of many staff amenities, including the tennis courts, basketball courts and a bowling green.

How is it significant?
The former Bryant and May Industrial Complex is of historical, architectural and social significance to the State of
Victoria.

Why is it significant?
The former Bryant and May Industrial Complex is of historical significance as evidence of the development of industry in Melbourne from the early 20th century. The history of the Bryant and May complex reveals a great deal about the history of manufacturing in Victoria. The English firm Bryant and May began manufacturing matches in Australia in 1885. It occupied two sites in Richmond and amalgamated with another British match manufacturer operating in the suburb before the growing size of its operations and workforce necessitated the construction of the existing complex. With 280 employees, Bryant and May had become a major employer, and in 1909, as a result of the merger and to accommodate new processes and increased production, a new factory was built adjacent to its old factory, a former brewery. These initial years show the importance of British capital in the development of Victoria's industry. The various changes in the buildings over the years can be directly related to the introduction of protective tariffs, their removal and the dumping of matches from overseas, and technological innovations. Machinery was regularly updated to cope with new processes and the declining use of
wax matches. The consumption of matches generally had declined and together with strong overseas competition forced the firm to diversify and merge yet again. By the late-1980s, the company had vacated the factory, reinforcing the pattern of de-industrialisation of Melbourne's inner suburbs.

The former Bryant and May Industrial Complex is of historical significance as a rare surviving example of model factory conditions and amenities. The complex was run as a model factory and reflected the Quaker principles of the original English founders. Evidence of the amenities provided for its workers such as the tennis courts and
dining room is still substantial. One of the first industrial nurses in Australia was employed at the factory from 1922.

The former Bryant and May Industrial Complex is of architectural significance for the quality and cohesion of its architectural development and for its association with the important Melbourne architect, William Pitt. The factory complex is one of the finest remnants of Richmond?s industrial heyday and its substantial intactness provides an excellent indication of industrial organisation and design of the early 20th century. Pitt designed the complex towards the end of an eminent career that was innovative, prolific and wide-ranging. Other significant industrial buildings for which he was responsible were the Denton Hat Mills in Abbotsford and the Foy and Gibson complex in Collingwood.

The former Bryant and May Industrial Complex has social significance as an important long-term part of the Richmond and inner Melbourne landscape. The factory was initially important as a large employer in working-class Richmond, but has over the years also become a prominent landmark for both local residents and other
residents of Melbourne. Its clock tower has been a familiar sight to generations of train travelers and visitors to the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and the complex has featured in films and television programs set in Melbourne. Bryant and May's 'Redheads Matches', intimately associated with the factory, are still a well-known commercial icon in Victoria.

The rules of the race were very simple, run to 200 Bourke Street, the Orient, without breaking the eggs in the parcel. Knowing that Barlow was my main competitor, the runner with the yellow band. I had to out-speed and outsmart him. Squizzy handed out the parcels to each of us. Just before the race began, Squizzy waved his hand and smiled at me. Then, I was off.

From Darlington Parade, Richmond, to Bourke Street, Melbourne. I knew I had to be smart, and fast. My feet worked faster than my mind, taking me to the side streets, the small narrow ones with nobody in them. Imagining the map of Melbourne in my mind, I pictured all the possible routes. Crossing onto Wellington Parade, I saw a glimpse of yellow, Barlow.

"So he decided to stick to the main roads," I thought to myself.

We were close to Burke Road now. The parliament was in sight on my right, I almost couldn't make out the shouts of all the drivers and pedestrians as I my heart was thudding so hard in my chest. There was that flash of yellow again, Barlow. Only a few paces in front of me. My mind formed a goal and my feet obeyed. It was like instinct, I didn't have to think.

Speeding my pace, and furthering my strides, the numbers on the houses were getting bigger and bigger. 120, 125, 150, 154, 160. Barlow was also getting closer. With the remaining blocks from 200 Burke Street, I sprinted. Then BAM. I crashed into Barlow in the doorway of 200 Burke Street. My first thought wasn't about the physique of my own body, but of the care the eggs were in.

"Good they are still intact," I thought to myself.

As the competitors took their marks i felt my heart pounding out of my chest. I have to win this race, i need to. As i starred down at my fathers old shoes, i compared them to my competitors, there was no hope. As squizzy called go, i leapt forward my egg ligghtly grasped in my left hand. I counted my strides, pacing myself. In no time i was dashing down Wellington parade. As i began to approach Barlow my legs began to fall beneath me. I pushed against the wind wiht all my might trying to approach Barlow. My egg still tightly gripped in my hand i pushed my strides. In a few short steps i would beat him. As the finish line approach butterflies
flew into my stomach. I pulled out any energy i had left and glided past Barlow. I had done it, i won the race, but had my egg stayed in tacked was the big question.

Take your marks

My feet were just behind the line.

Get set. Go.

I had so much adrenaline I raced out like no tomorrow. I did follow or look at anyone. Everyone was blocked out of my view. I kept on slipping on the tram tracks. I could see squizzy Taylor in the corner of eye. I could hear him Shouting" Go Charlie" "Watch the eggs he yelled". I had to Remember or the shortcuts and all the routes. It was hard running there were cars motor bikes ubers and bicycles left right, and Centre I didn't know where to look. Then it started spitting rain. Every time I ran the water would run up my ankles. I slid the eggs in my left pocket since my cell phone and the remote to the garage were in the right pocket. I kept on thinking fast legs fast arms. Nearing the end of Darlington Parade, I saw two runners turn left, I went through the shortcut through the Gardens. Whilst running through the Garden I was dodging all these Drones that these little kids were flying. Wearing my brand-new white shoes was a tragedy, they were getting wet as it started in rain. I turned right onto Rother wood street. The only though in my head now was to catch up with the runner ahead. With every step I made I had nearly catch up to the runner ahead. Oh boy… I wish I had a hover board right now. Barlow was thinking smart. At a moment I had lost Barlow as he quickly turned onto Bridge road. I could see in his eyes that we had no energy left, at the corner ahead I saw him turn around and slow down. I was close enough to him I could have touched him. I could hear the breath coming out of his mouth. He stopped and took out his phone to look at direction on Google maps. Suddenly, the favorite of the race wasn't looking so good. As I was running past Barlow I said," How's it going mate" He turned around and said, "Bugger off". Each stride of mine became faster and larger. As I turned the corner left at Mountain View hotel Barlow caught up to me. We were stride by stride now. He ran side by side now till we got to Church street. As we turned into church street an Uber delivering Macca's nearly ran us over. By now I was warmed up, pretending it was just one of my night runs. Soon Bridge road became then Wellington Parade. As we swerved right Barlow went wide. " You play nice now" he shouted.

As a Deliveroo Motor bike skidded towards me, as he stopped at the Red Traffic light. It wasn't my safety that crossed my mind it was the Eggs. My arms going forward on the ground scraping my knees on the trams tracks I tried to think positive, but I knew I was gone. I tell you, if it wasn't for the eggs, I tell you I would have still been there on the tram tracks. I felt like a car speeding through amber lights. With blood pouring down my knees. I picked myself up and wobbled down Wellington Parade. I couldn't bear to look down at my knees or hands. To my surprise Barlow wasn't that far in front now. I ran fast down the hill to Treasury Garden, with Parliament house up ahead. I was still surprising in good chance. As I was approaching the city the crowd of people and tourists were largening. Dodging through motor bikes parked on footpaths and people, on their phone not locking up was challenging. Instead I changed my attitude and ran through the empty bus lane. Approaching the Spring street intersection, I saw the Blue and Green Runners some only a few meters in front. Now it was Barlow I was after. Parliament house, at the top of the city, signaled Bourke street. I was flying thought the streets. I was almost nearly up to Barlow again. As he raised his hand to the door, he turned and saw me lunging. To late he yelled as we both crashed through the door onto the ground, much to the delight. I picked myself up, unaided and noticed Squizzy sitting on the stool at the end of the bar. Slowly, by slowly the teams started rushing thorough the doors. So, the four of us did as we were told and soon the four colored parcels were lined up across the bar. Dasher unwrapping the blue parcels. The two eggs on the blue team were unbroken. Next was the Green, the two eggs were in good condition. Yellow team were next, the two eggs were in unfit state. As Dasher unwrapped my parcel, my eyes made contacted to the floor. They announced that the two eggs were Unbroken. I made Won. I couldn’t believe it. Squizzy came up to me. I was a little shocked. He said” Welcome aboard Lad”.

As soon as the box hit my hand, I saw 200 Bourke St. I knew the streets of Richmond like the back of my hand. I was ready to take on this thrilling race. ‘On your marks, get set, Go!’ It felt like my heart had just jumped out of my chest. As I took one step, I became off balance and I face planted hard on the painful ground. As I watched the others sprint away, I struggled to get back up to try to catch up to the rest of the competitors. Every time I took a step, a big puddle of water splashed up against my ankles and my socks started to soak up with water. Eventually I was at Wellington Parade, I was so close to the end of the race. All I was thinking about was If I had broken the eggs or not. Finally, I had arrived at the finishing line. Me and another fellow where neck and neck as we both barged through the doors and the inspector came out to check our eggs. He took the other guys box and looked up slowly and said ‘I’m so sorry, you broke your eggs’ he said quietly. This means I had a chance of winning. He walked over to me and quickly grabbed the box out of my hands as he slowly opened the lid my heart started to beat even faster. ‘Congratulations both your eggs are unbroken’ He said very happily. I had won! ‘I knew you could do it Charlie, I knew it’ Squizzy whispered. Welcome aboard, lad.’

What type of a suburb was Richmond? In the 1920's Richmond was a poor and working class suburb. The residents in Richmond depended on each other desperately for food, water and other essential items to survive. Neighbours helping each other was a necessity. Richmond was not a very safe suburb, and the streets were quite dirty. Because it was a working class suburb, and its residents did not have much money, simple pleasures like food and heating cost money, and many people went without. Diseases were rife and common; if one person got a sickness then all of a sudden it would spread until the whole suburb had the disease. They couldn’t afford medical attention.

Why did Charlie Feehan enjoy running? Charlie enjoyed running because when he ran he could keep warm, and he felt free. Because Charlie's family was pretty poor, they could not afford heating. Running also allowed Charlie to clear his mind from what was happening in his life, as he felt the loss of his father.

What legacy did Charlie's father leave him? Charlie's father left him with the thought of having to be the man of the house now, and to try to help his mum as best he could to look after his younger brother Jack.

I stood at the starting line thinking over and over again about the run he was about to face. I heard the starting whistle for us to walk up to a line, I then paused and remembered everything that was up for stakes. Before I knew it a loud whistle blew and before I could think what to do my legs had already taken me running we ran down to the end of Darlington parade and as we got closer to the end I could see Melbourne cricket ground the runners then ran right as then I could get a glimpse of mountain view hotel I knew that I had to be careful along this road for any expectant obstacles. I began to get control of my legs and pushed myself forward. Up ahead I could see the treasury gardens I knew that I was not to far from the end. As I passed treasury gardens a flashback of when my dad and I would go there as a child I then put my focus back on the race. We veered right as I then focused on running towards parliament house. As I got nearer and nearer to Bourke street I turned my pace quicker and made the home stretch. I became aware of my egg and hoped that it was ok. I saw the end of the race and I sprinted with every bone in my body with the help of my dad's boots. I was neck and neck with another contender and gave it everything I had. The feeling when I stepped over the line was a relief to finish also a relief of joy. As Mr squizzy then came over to me and told me about my egg - the hardboiled egg.

As I walked into the room with Dasher, I spotted multiple cans of RedBull scattered on the polished floor, as three young boys, about my age, sat on stools all looking down at their phones. Each wore a different coloured sash. Blue. Green. Yellow. The blue kid was small and scruffy, with basketball shoes laced tightly, and a mop of dark brown hair hanging over his blue eyes. His freckled nose was…. Let’s just say above average size. He was the only one that glanced up as he heard me enter the room. The boy wearing green, was also short, but instead of lean and thin like big nose, he was stocky and broad, his arms bulging through the sleeves of his Adidas print tee. He looked calm and relaxed, his legs spread out, with his foot tapping along to the music in the background. Then there was the kid with the yellow sash. Henry Barlow. Tall and fit, he looked sure to win. Champion hoodie and Nikes, he was a basic popular rich kid. He’s the type of guy that always has a girlfriend, and always wins fights, and always gets his way. I look down at my torn, scruffy brandless sneakers and almost felt ashamed.

Dasher handed me a red sash. “Go sit down Feehan.” He said, pointing to the empty chair next to big-nose. Almost as soon as I sat down, a bunch of older men, who looked to be nearly 40 trampled in, lead by a handsome man in a large overcoat, with hair slicked back and dark eyes glistening evily. I knew him to be the gangster Squizzy Taylor. The type of 31 year old that decided when he hit 30, he became an old wise man, and could only hang with people old enough to be his parents. Still, his demeanour frightened me.

“Hello lads,” he grinned, flashing a gold tooth. I shivered. The next few minutes flew by. Squizzy read out the odds, which had me at the lowest; 10/1. I zoned out as he continued to read out the rules. He strode back and forth in front of us, and he eventually stopped in front of me and looked down at my destroyed shoes. “Jesus mate, you need a new pair a shoes!” he clicked his fingers and Dashers brought forward a shining new pair of Yeezys. I gaped in awe. “T-thank you sir.” I said, taking them and sliding them onto my blistered feet; and oh the comfort. I bounced up and down and snapped back into action.

We were handed our eggs and I slid them into my jacket pocket. Squizzy led us out onto a deck, leading off onto Darlington Parade. He pointed towards the edge of the garden. “Line up there boys. The address is 200 Bourke St.” As soon as he stated the address, I knew it to be one Breadtop, a chinese branded pastry shop. I’ve walked past many times, looking at the creamy cakes, and buttery pastries, as my mouth watered. As we headed up the path, big-nose turned to me. “I forgot the address, was it 300 or 200?” he whispered in a panicked tone. “It’s 200.” I whispered back, and he gave a nod of thanks.

My heart racing, I stepped up to the gate. I slipped my hands back into my pocket. The two eggs were safely in each side. “Get set…. Go!” I launched off at steady pace, and then… I’m on the grass. I would have still been with the group if it weren’t for Barlow. I heard the thudding of the Nostril’s clunky Adidas go past me as I lay there, panting. Come on Charlie, I said to myself jumping up and going off again. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted Squizzy and Dasher, filming me on their phones. “You better get going Charlie!” Squizzy yelled. Nearing the top of Darlington, I spotted Nostrils leaning on a wall, quickly checking his phone for the directions. Continuing up, I saw Green sash up on Bourke, hopping onto a tram. I saw a flash of yellow and basketball shorts up ahead yell some profanity at him. Barlow. I sped up and was soon right beside him. “G’day Barlow,” I said casually. “Bugger off.” He replied grumpily. I pushed infront of him as he pushed me in the back. We veered right and he was back along side me. I bumped him in the shoulder as he yelled. “You play nice now Feehan!” I laughed happily, and kept getting faster.

We veered up Spring St, a Dominos Pizza Delivery guy riding alongside me on a motorbike. Barlow was long gone, and I turned and saw his shoving around with green sash. Parliament House, and then….. down Bourke St. I spotted Breadtop and ran into it on my right. Squizzy and Dasher stood there clapping. I did it. I crossed the line. Barlow was next, and then Green sash, and Nostrils. My eggs. I pull them out of my pocket. Nothing. No cracks or tears, the eggs were unbroken. I was thrilled. I had gotten the job.

I waited with the other three competitors, toeing the line nervously. There was silence. Then the gunshot sounded. I nearly missed it, what with all the yelling from Squizzy's mates and sounds of traffic in the distance. Beginning to run, I knew I had to play it smart and take any shortcuts I could get. At the end of Darlington Parade, I saw two runners turn into the gardens. Big mistake.

I decided to turn right into Rotherwood street. Nearing the bend, I almost had to stop as some lunatic went straight through a give way sign. Shaking off the water that had been sprayed up onto me, I kept going. I was getting close to the person in front of me. Coming up to Bridge street, I saw that the person had a yellow sash. Barlow, thinking smart. I had just about caught up to him by the time we reached the Mountain View Hotel when he suddenly veered left on to Bridge Street. Caught off guard, I was slow on the turn and got stuck at the next traffic lights as he went through. Darn.

When the lights finally changed, I started to run again. All I wanted was to catch up to Barlow, to know I was still in the game. After a few hundred metres, I saw him. Down near Treasury Gardens, with Parliament House up ahead. I still had a chance. Approaching the Spring street intersection, I could see the blue and green runners about 10 feet away from my right shoulder. I could wait for the traffic to stop, or I could run. Like a madman, I threw myself into the intersection, between tooting cars, trams and motorbikes. I got to the other side, unharmed.

Continuing to run, I saw Barlow again, passing Parliament house. Running in the gutter while Barlow struggled on the crowded street was paying off. I was gaining but not fast enough. The path ahead looked clear so I tucked my head and sprinted. Many of the passerby's stared at me curiously but I didn’t care. Twenty yards became fifteen. Fifteen became ten. I was near flying. I could see the Orient's door. As he raised his hand to the door, he turned and saw me lunging. Too late.

Streaks of sunlight shine through the clouds, blinding me. I look ahead at the journey I have ahead of me, knowing that I will make it there without any problems. The run from Darlington Parade, where I stand determined now, to 200 Bourke Street will be no more than 5 kilometres, an easy stroll in the park for me. Ms. Lyneham hands my three other opponents and me different coloured sashes. I gaze sideways. Yellow, green and blue. I wrap my own red sash on my right arm. I know my opponents are favoured by the spectators, but to win, I will need speed and cleverness, and my opponents lack the latter.

My heart speeds up as Ms. Lyneham hands us each a coloured package, containing fragile eggs that will break at the slightest disturbance. The eggs will hinder my ability to run at full speed. I carefully tuck the package in my jacket, into a place where they will be least likely to be broken. A map of the Richmond area unfurls in my mind. I map out a vague path of where my feet should take me.

"Alright everyone, on your marks, get set," Ms Lyneham yells as I bend down, "GO!"

I push off from the pavement and spring forward. I feel my legs pushing me down past the street. Occasionally, I can catch a curious face peering outside from the windows, watching us run like the wind. The steady rhythm of my feet landing on the hard pavement motivates me to keep going. I quickly glance at the other competitors, who are not so far behind me. I take a right turn, and soon after, I turn to the left. My opponents have decided to run straight ahead, leaving an empty space behind me. Not a wise choice, I think to myself. Church Street, although wider and more spacious, tend to be more congested around that area. Weaving through pedestrians and navigating the busy traffic will be no easy feat. Instead, I go onto Rotherwood Street and turn onto Church Street, into a much less busy section of the road. I smile to myself, for I know my opponents will be far behind now.

Before long, Church Street turns into Wellington parade. The sounds and feelings of the city envelopes me. I see the MCG not far from here on my left. Wind blows into my face as I near Jolimont station, caused by an incoming tram. Across the street, past the vibrant rush of cars on the road, I see the Fitzroy Gardens. Not far now, I think to myself. I allow myself to slow down slightly. I start daydreaming about how great it would be to win this race. The pounding of footsteps behind me jerks me back to reality, my opponents are only a few metres behind me. I quickly look forward, and see that the pedestrian traffic light has just turned green. I sprint, barely making it to the road before the light starts flashing red.

After crossing the road, I see the other two competitors stuck behind a stubborn red light, with a scowl on their faces. I allow myself a small smile, and then continue on to Spring Street. I then wonder where the other competitor was, far behind… or ahead? A flash of blue appears in front of me. I start to panic. They were so far ahead, I will have to start sprinting to catch up, so I do. Treasury Gardens becomes a blur in my peripheral vision as I fly past. The blue runner is getting closer and closer. Parliament House flashes past as I turn onto Burke Street. The gap between us was slowly getting smaller and smaller. Ms Lyneham was waiting at 200 Bourke Street. Filled with determination, I run the fastest I have ever run in my life, and finally pass the blue runner, and pass the finish line first.

I was overcome with joy, but then I suddenly remembered the eggs, still sitting snugly in my pocket. Dread fills me and my trembling hands as I pull out the small red package. Were the eggs broken in my final desperate dash for victory. I watch with apprehension as Ms Lyneham unwraps my package, and pulls out one egg, one unbroken egg.

"Congratulations, Charlie, you have won the race!" exclaims Ms Lyneham with a smile.

I almost start jumping with joy, but I stop myself to avoid looking like a fool in public. I had won. All those years of running had paid off. Victory had never felt so good.

One of the significant decisions Charlie made was to stay hidden in the bush even when Nostrils was getting beaten up by Barlow. The other significant decisions Charlie made was that he lied to constable about why they were out late at night and what they were doing.

The consequence of leaving nostrils there whilst Barlow was beating him up could of lead to Charlie getting beaten up as well which meant they both wouldn't have been able to get them self to hospital. Because Charlie stayed where he was whilst nostrils was beaten up lead to nostrils getting badly injured and in hospital. The second significant choice that Charlie made was lying to the constable which meant the cop didn’t find out about what Charlie was doing with Mr Squizzy.

I think that Mr Squizzy would have treated Charlie badly and given him dangerous jobs to do. As in making Charlie take huge amounts of liquor around town and to faraway places.

I think that I wouldn’t have done the race in the first place. But I wouldn't have agreed to do the dangerous jobs that Charlie did.

Charlie made big decisions one of his decisions that he made was to work for Squizzy Taylor. He put himself and others in risk while he did this. It affected the relationship with his mum as she didn’t trust him to work for him.

Charlie's mum made an important decisions as to if she was allowing Charlie or not to go work for Squizzy Taylor. She said to Charlie that he was not allowed to work for Squizzy Taylor. This made Charlie have to lie to his mum and put himself and Nostrils in danger if he had listened to his mum in the first place. But as Charlie didn't listen he got himself and Nostrils hurt.

Mr. Peacock treated Charlie's mum really badly. He wasn't a nice, loyal, trustworthy friend and if he had acted differently he would have still been Charlie's family friends. Mr. Peacock made others feel scared, sad and put him in risk of injury.

Squizzy Taylor made decisions about how he acted towards others and the risk he put others in. He put Charlie in risk and doing dangerous jobs. If Squizzy Taylor didn't treat Charlie that badly Charlie would still have worked for Squizzy Taylor. These decisions also influenced Squizzy Taylor as a person as he didn't have many friends and people got angry with him for Squizzy always asking them for money.

Some decisions the Mr. Redmond made was that he supported and encouraged Charlie within his training throughout running and boxing. Mrs. Redmond was always supporting Charlie and helping his family with food and anything else they needed. If Mr. Redmond hadn't helped Charlie train Charlie wouldn't have entered the race and he wouldn’t have gotten his strength and flexibility.

Alice made important decisions with Charlie and her dad. She supported Charlie and helped him complete in the Ballarat Mile. She also supported her dad in his issues with money. This influenced her dad as he felt cared for and Alice helped Charlie by helping him win the Ballarat Mile.
