Their food usually consisted of cornmeal and some sort of meat. Since meat has to be refrigerated to be kept good, slaves would either eat it all at the beginning of the month or try to eat the rotten food throughout the month. Most of the meat would end up rotting, so most slaves would only end up with their cornmeal, and if that was gone they’d starve.
