Witch hunts were used to find, capture, and question women accused of being witches. This would often result in imprisonment and or death. The Puritans believed in uneducated and ridiculous signs of witchcraft and would test women using these means. For example, one commonly used method to find out if someone was a witch was to put them in the water. If they floated, they were guilty. If they sank, they were not.

Calvinism was a religion followed by the puritan settlers. They believed in total depravity, predestination, and limited atonement. Their strict way of life heavily influenced the crisis in Salem. Extreme accusations and punishments matched the extent of their religion. In fact, they sought to teach their religion so much; they created a majority of the Ivy League schools we still have today.

Tituba was a Native American slave who was believed to be the first witch of Salem. She showed very undeserving girls magic, which later the public deemed to be witchcraft. These girls ended up profiting by accusing women of being witches left and right. Often times, they would accuse social outcasts, or people seen as odd and different, such as Tituba. All in all, she was the woman who began the trials.

Even after The Salem Witch Trials, America still went to make insane and uneducated claims that effected thousands of lives. In the 1950's, a man "exposed" a list of names in a courthouse. This list supposedly had names of every communist who resided among them. It caused America to go into a vulnerable state of confusion and fear. Within this chaos was little clarity, until Marylin Monroes husband was accused, blacklisted, and created art from it.

The puritans were some of the first settlers of America. In fact, we can blame a lot of our problems on them and their intense lifestyle. This group of people believed in extreme religious ideals and escaped the rule of Great Britain to pursue just that. They brought what many historians call "America's least proudest moment"; the Salem Witch Trials.
