Arthur Miller was an author and play writer that created such stories as The Crucible, Death of a Salesman, and A View from the Bridge. The play The Crucible is based off of the real events that occurred at the Salem Witch Trials. The play's namesake comes from an item used to melt metals down to purify them. In these trials, girls would act as if they were in pain and were suffering in agony because of the accused. The Puritans believed in Calvinism, which says the devil is constantly at work in the world through disease, disaster, or misfortune.
