Conservation of cultural heritage requires critical examination of the past, as much as its practice demands provision for the future. Debates on the omission and erasure of certain narratives, and the privileging of particular stories over others, have come to a head in recent years. The International Day for Monuments and Sites 2021 draws its inspiration from the cross-cutting discourse hosted by ICOMOS initiatives, including but not limited to: the inaugural ‘Diversify/Decolonise Heritage!’ Workshop (launched in July 2020), various symposia dedicated to the themes of ‘Shared Cultures, Shared Heritage, Shared Responsibility’, workshops on Human Rights and Heritage Management, the webinars addressing ‘Indigenous Peoples and World Heritage’ and ‘People + Peace: The Role of Cultural Heritage in Building a More Just and Peaceful World Through Education, Diversity and Community Inclusion’ as examples of the work carried out by ICOMOS Committees and Working Groups on these important issues.

With the ongoing efforts to retaliate against the hate shown to the AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) community, the Black Lives Matter protests, the Anti-Muslim Hate rallies, etc., this World Heritage Day aims to bridge those gaps between communities and build a safe and peaceful environment for all members from unique places to respect and admire their own culture, as well as others.

In 1982, ICOMOS labelled the 18th of April as International Day for Monuments and Sites. Taking in example the architectural marvels such as the Taj Mahal, the Konark Sun Temple, the Red Fort, and many more, we can clearly perceive that our forefathers were geniuses who, even without modern engineering technologies, made their mark in the history of our diverse nations. 

Even during those times, various groups co-existed harmoniously. However, in today’s fast paced world, the situation is different. With racial differences creating barriers between communities, this day is essential to show that all that matters is humans being human. That’s why this day aims to preserve the culture or natural heritage of every nation and community and celebrate the diverse features that makes us, people.

The World Heritage Convention (1972) states: “deterioration or disappearance of any item of the cultural or natural heritage constitutes a harmful impoverishment of the heritage of all the nations of the world” – however imbalances in recognition, interpretation and ultimately, conservation of various cultural manifestations continue to exist.

Every day people all over the world celebrate their cultural heritage, simply by living their lives in a way that embodies who they are and where they came from. But one day a year is set aside to celebrate the joint history and heritage of the human race. World Heritage Day encourages us to celebrate all the world’s cultures, and to bring awareness to important cultural monuments and sites, and to espouse the importance of preserving the world’s cultures.

The idea behind observing World Heritage Day is to make people of different geographical regions meet with each other and share information about their history, heritage and traditions. It makes people of diverse societies know more about each other, and ultimately promotes co-habitation.
