“The self is the composite of the total number of habits that determine the tendencies for everything we think, feel, experience, and do. In contrast, identity involves the partial and variable selection of habits and attributes that we use to represent ourselves to ourselves and to others as well as those aspects that are perceived by ourselves and by others as salient,” (Turino, 102). I consider my musical identity to be very much diverse. Both spontaneity and curiosity are key characteristics that make up my personality. I have a great deal of interests, hobbies and habits. All of which, contribute to that diversity in my taste in music. My musical identity can be attributed to being of Asian descent, a female, a wife, a mother of a nine-year-old little girl, a “millennial” and so forth. According to Turino, these are “constellations of habit” that “are who I am and guide what I do,” (Turino, 101). For instance, the genres of music that I am inclined to listen to would include: different types of electronica, alternative rock, easy listening, some hip hop and even sometimes classical. I can even appreciate Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and the like due to my upbringing. Those were some of my father’s favorite artists. As for my occasional craving for classical music- that stems from having played the violin for 5 years back in grade school. I find it soothing and it allows me to reminisce in those times. Listening to electronica could fit into the stereotype of being Asian but it could also relate to me being a millennial. You could also say that being a millennial is the reason behind my other choices in music such as alternative rock and hip hop. I must add that my taste in rock and hip hop has changed a bit. I’m finding that I don’t listen to the hardcore stuff anymore probably due to being a mother as I would not want my daughter listening to certain things and I wouldn’t want to be hypocritical, among other things. Turino discusses how occupation in North America is considered to be a big part of our identity. Turino also states, “In realizing our own identities, we tend to foreground aspects that are regarded as important by the people around us,” (Turino, 102). I can unquestionably relate to that being that I started to more frequently, play easy listening or soft pop music when I started working nine-to-five jobs. I would highlight my interest in artists or songs of that genre that I considered to be appropriate, conforming to my work environment and to the people in it to some degree. I had included and immersed myself in that professional group.

The violin is an instrument that I once fell in love with when it was first introduced to me. As I mentioned, on rare occasions, I’ll turn on some classical music. The sound is intriguing to me and I do associate it with a “higher status” or “class,” as Turino mentions on page 105. It is also the closest I can come to reminiscing in playing the violin without actually having to go through practicing and mastering a piece in order to play it to my satisfaction and it involves an entire orchestra rather than just myself.

Creator's Last name, First name. “Title of the digital image.” Title of the website, First name Last name of any contributors, Version (if applicable), Number (if applicable), Publisher, Publication date, URL.

There are some reasons why I don’t listen to what I referred to, as the “hardcore stuff,” anymore. Those reasons of course involve my family. I try to be more family oriented in everything that I do which even includes the music that I choose to listen to, especially in the presence of children. My child, for instance, may find swear words offensive and she may not understand or relate to the lyrics in a song. In addition to not wanting to be hypocritical, I don’t necessarily agree or relate to some of the lyrics or raw emotion in the songs like I used to, as my view on different issues and on life itself, has evolved.

“Stay,” is a song that both my daughter and I can listen to. It’s catchy, fresh, fun and upbeat. My daughter loves to sing along to songs and this one, in particular, sets her in one of those moods. Most importantly, it’s kid friendly as it doesn’t contain any explicit language. The fact that this song of my choosing, does not contain explicit language, relates to my identity of being a mother which, in turn, ties into my musical identity.

When I say that my taste in music could be attributed to being of Asian descent, I am referring to the idea of electronica music being extremely popular among Asians, especially ones I grew up with. It could just be a stereotype and I could be wrong since I do not necessarily know if this is completely true across the board since I don’t have hard evidence but it is what I would think is a common thought among the general population.
