The Olympics sparked competition between the US and USSR in many ways. First, the global audience. With the US and USSR wanting to spread their government, the Olympics was the perfect opportunity to prove that their country was better. It turned from a sports competition, to a government competition. Secondly, the Olympics also sparked protests between the superpowers. When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, the US and various other countries boycotted the Olympics. To get back in the US, the USSR didn't participate in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Finally, the two countries turned the games into a means of power. If any country could gain the most medals they were better. This competition ultimately undermined the purpose of the games, taking it out on their athletes and other countries.

Comparison

There are many comparisons between the Cold War Olympics and the present day games. First, the Olympics have returned to their original purpose. While there is still competition in the Olympics to this day, it's more focused on the athletes. Back in the Cold War, the Olympics were all about power and influence, now they're about talent and athletes. There's a lot less stress from the government. Second, Russia's banned from the games. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the USSR turned back into Russia. In 2019, the World Anti-Doping Agency concluded that Russia was using a state-operated doping scheme during the 2014 Winter Olympics. The athletes now compete for the Russian Olympic Committee(ROC). Finally, the US and Russia are on better terms, within the Olympics and out. Without the competition from the Cold War, both countries can view the games as a sports competition and respect each other's skills. The US and Russia share the same ideals when it comes to global issues.
