Based on this passage, what can you deduce about the friendship between Lilian Jean and Cassie?

They had a fake friendship that revolved around Cassie getting revenge on Lillian Jean. Their friendship was also more of a "master-servant" type of friendship with Lilian Jean being the one in charge.

Which pieces of evidence in this passage (words, phrases and expressions) led you to make this deduction?

- "I took Lillian Jean's books"
- "Miz Lillian Jean"
- "Lillian Jean didn't even realise it had all been just a game."

How did these pieces of evidence help you make these deductions?

- "I took Lillian Jean's books" and "Miz Lillian Jean" shows that Cassie was more of a slave to Lillian Jean than a friend. Lillian Jean was of a higher status than Cassie.
- "Lillian Jean didn't even realise it had all been just a game." shows that Cassie never intended to be Lillian Jean's friend and it had all just been a scam/set-up that Lillian Jean fell into.

Bonus Question:

It seemed like Lillian Jean did not expect Cassie’s scheme at all. Why do you think it was so?
- Lillian Jean never expected to get tricked by a black person who was younger than her. She underestimated the blacks and did not think that Cassie was smart enough.
- She was clouded Cassie's kindness and was happy that she had a black "slave" to boss around and show off in front of her other white friends.
