The project could create jobs, stimulate construction and infrastructure sectors.

The island might be covered by seawater owing to the increasing sea level. So it might not be suitable to live in the following few decades or centuries.

The cement may pollute the mud during mixing, this will destroy the biodiversity and ecosystem next to the construction for around 100 meters

The government cannot give out a specific cost of the island, because the cost might increase due to the delay of the construction or estimation mistake. If the government paid too much during the construction, the government might not have sufficient fees to maintain the basic needs of the people in HK.

The government expects to earn a profit in a long future, but I afraid that the government doesn’t have enough money to fulfil people’s basic needs before getting the profit.

To conclude, it is too risky to construct the island as a result of the irreversible consequences.

-The project may occur overspending, postponed

-water level will rise in a long period and the island will submerged

-during summer, typhoon occur, leading to storm surged, which means that water splash to inland, transportation may be disrupted. Showing that it’s not safe to live there.

1. The materials used for the reclamation

• deep cement mixing is adopted

—> minimise dredging of mud from the seabed to reduce the environmental impact to marine life.

—>reduce the consumption of marine sand as less amount of mud and replacing it with marine sand fill are not required.

• comparing to traditional reclamation method

  —>reduce the environment impact to both marine life and human.

  2. Providing land for people and commercial needs

• In government perspective, Hong Kong is competing to the world as being an international city with commercial and financial development

  —> the reclaimed land can be used for developing residential areas( for people to live as the housing supply is very demanding), commercial areas( for people to develop financial building), transport ( connect the Lantau islands with other areas in Hong Kong)

• proposes creating the city's third central business district (CBD) by constructing large artificial islands through massive land reclamation.

• It provides 1000 hectares of land which is one-sixth of the size of Shatin( can be considered as large size.

Since the central waters are shallow, with an average water depth of 4 to 8 meters, it is not difficult to reclaim the sea. The 1,700 hectares of reclamation is almost the same size as an airport, and there is no particular reason to believe that the cost will be particularly high.

-The cost of transportation infrastructure is lower

The location of the artificial island of Lantau is moderate, the shortest distance from Hong Kong Island is only 4 km.In the future, the transportation network of the artificial island of Lantau can reduce the burden of three cross-sea tunnels, provide shortcuts from Hong Kong Island to the airport and the west of the New Territories.

Cost effectiveness : the cost of conducting this project is uncertain, can’t estimate how much they need to use on it ,the victim is still an innocent taxpayer in the end.

After conducting, government are planning to make it become CBD. However the main problem we are facing is residential problem, can it solve the problem effectively?

Conducting it need 10 yrs or above, and also build the transportation system, it spend 5 more years or above. At last, maybe it will spend around 20 years to fully develop this island

During conducting, toxic gases may be produced, thus causing global warming. Global warming causes glaciers to melt and seawater to expand. Sea level may rise. Kai Yi Chau may facing the threat of “being submerged”
