Brown v. Board of Education overturned Plessy v. Ferguson. Brown v. Board of Education began after a young black girl was refused entry into an all-white school on the basis of race in 1954. Brown v. Board of Education overturned this legal precedent/ court ruling of Plessy v. Ferguson by arguing that segregation was unconstitutional as it pertained to the 14th amendment. The 14th amendment states that those who are born in the US are citizens of the US and ought to be equally protected under the laws we reside. Oliver Brown argued that segregation blatantly disregarded this amendment, and henceforth that it should be illegalized. The Supreme Court sided with Brown and segregation was deemed unconstitutional.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott began when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man. The seat she sat in was considered part of the "black section" of the bus, and when she denied the man the seat after being asked by the bus driver, she was arrested. After her arrest, and other reluctance to desegregate in Montgomery, working African-Americans mobilized to boycott the Montgomery bus system. African-Americans made up the majority of those who funded and depended on public transportation, because of this, a boycott would mean a huge decrease in the funding that the bus system received. Since Montgomery relied on their funding for these busses, their unified effort forced Montgomery to acknowledge the decision of Brown v. Board of Education, and desegregate not only the bus system, but the entirety of the city. Martin Luther King Jr. also had a huge hand in the organization of this boycott, as a young man himself this allowed for his name to get out there and grasp the attention of those who needed change to happen the most. The unification that was caused by this boycott would also delve into other acknowledgments of the lack of African-American civil rights.

The Little Rock Nine was a group of nine black students who attended an all-white school located in the South. Despite the decision of Brown v. Board of Education, an active call to desegregate, they were met with extreme violence from the white citizens/ students that surrounded them. Their very presence on that school campus was deemed a political act, despite permission to be there. The racial violence and threats that the Little Rock Nine had to face on a daily basis directly exhibits how white Southerners tightened their grasp onto Jim Crow Laws.
