A blue figure lurked amidst the snow below: it was Joe, in his lavender blue climbing suit. I raced towards him, only to find him lying down with his face buried in the snow - dead! His poor soul was hanging on to that rope: holding on to that thread which held it from falling off the great carpet of life and I, with a heart cold as ice, cut that thread! I killed him!

I screamed and screamed and screamed, only to realize my voice was being masked by the howling wind and towering mountains. At that point I remembered my mothers last words; "Take the leap." I shrugged the thought away, the irony was almost humorous. But then i stopped. My brain went into overdrive. I was going to die, that was certain; but how would I want to? Freeze to death, frostbite torturing me or take the leap? My crazy mind choose the latter. I took out my Swiss knife from my shoe and said my prayers. As I inched the blade closer to my only lifeline, I thought of my family, my friends, the people I love. It was time. But just as i was about to cut the rope, and subsequently my existence from earth, i felt a tug on the rope.

As I was falling with increasing speed, i used my legs and moved them back and forth making my entire body swing. I see a wall made of thick, not like the soft snow earlier. I took my axe in my hand and kept it ready. As I swung harder and harder i could see the wall coming closer . I took my chance... i swung my axe and it grasped the ice and I held on to it with dear life, hanging on the side of a steep dangerous cliff with just an axe. I felt the bitter cold air surrounding me and bits of snow brush across my face. I wasn't falling anymore. I felt a jerk come upon me, a tension in the rope, "did Simon get help?".

I am a murderer; I am a traitor and most of all I am a coward. How could I have let this happen? How could I have let my best friend die in my own hands? It was I who persuaded him to join me on this once exhilarating event, and now look where it has leaded us to, his death and my depression. There is still a chance that he is out there, even though the fall may have been long, I still had a sliver of hope inside of me that was convinced he was still alive. I decided to rest, since there wasn’t anything I could do, the night sky was an abyss and midnight air sent shivers down my spine. Suddenly, the sound of a familiar voice interrupted the hushed atmosphere, except it was darkened and filled with rage and revulsion as it weakly called out my name. - It had to be Joe! A feeling of happiness and terror rushed through me at the same time, as I ran out the tent; I saw a bruised and bloody figure that made my every hair on my body stand up straight, I hesitated for a second, but soon built up the courage to examine the creature once more-It was Joe! As he marched closer to me his expression darkened, his eyes were completely black, as though he’d been possessed.

“You murderer.” he screamed “You traitor. You coward.”

This is it, the final end , my worse nightmare, my doom… series of momentous memories flashed before my eyes, as I knew deep down, my chapter has finally arrived at its catastrophe , an array of questions bombarded my thoughts, could this be it??? Will I die?? Will Simon be able to save me?? I stood there dumbfounded, lost in the midst of snow , as the cold yet brutal weather stroke me once again. A range of scattered emotions emerged through the coarse of my body sending tingles of fear down my spine. My fingers loosened in response toward the sharp wind as my nails engraved it’s a way through the rope resorting as my hindmost of hope . I wasn’t going to let go, not this time, a sense of optimism strived its way back with relief, until the unexpected came forth…

There was no chance of Simon hauling me up. It would be suicidal for him to attempt it. Fear surged through my veins as my mind tried to grab a hold of what was happening. I had never been this close to death before and so I was in a total state of panic. A million thoughts were rushing through my head at this point, "Will I survive?' "Did my best friend leave me here to die?" I didn't want to waste the sparse energy I had left to unleash my anger on Simon. Instead I was fighting against death on a towering mountain. Had I stayed in one place, I would freeze to death so I had to think quick. I didn't have anything to cut the rope and the harness was too cold for me to grab and release without gloves. I tried with my gloves but my hand would slide off each time, building frustration and releasing energy. I looked up into what seemed like an endless sky and said my prayers. The cold was taking control of my brain and I almost lost consciousness of what was happening. I was about to close my eyes for the last time when I felt a slight tug on the rope.

Simon's account:
I sat still in an attempt to eliminate the memories of Joe as I stared blankly into the emptiness of the ray-less sky in repentance. The biting chillness of breeze and the dark howl of wind warned me of an oncoming storm, which kept me from fantasizing this moment as a devious nightmare. The question I'd been dreading to face, unfortunately engulfed my thoughts quickly. Had I really killed Joe? I hugged my knees to my chest while I buried my face in between as if to omit the guilt eating away my exasperated and frozen soul. An abrupt bolt of lightning flashed splitting the calm sky into two followed by a loud crackling sound of thunder, drawing an involuntary flinch from me. Another lightning flashed and another thunder sounded and another and another, working together like an antagonistic pair. 'What if he's alive?' a small voice of hope in the back of my mind spoke up. I decided to give my instincts a second chance; give my voice of hope a second chance. I sprinted towards the edge to find nothing. "JOE!" I called in desperation. "JOE!!" I called louder, getting infuriated at myself by the second. No response. How could I be so heartless to my dearest friend? I dropped to my knees in defeat and despair as I let the tears, prickling the corners of my eyes for a while, shed. I'm now labeled for life as, a murderer.

Simon's Account

The harsh cold chilled his fingers into permanent numbness, the bitter wind laughed at him as it tore through his skin and spread to every inch of his already shivering body, making his muscles shriek in pain. Simon pushed his heavy feet through the aftermath of a raging avalanche, his thick snow boots felt like they were being melted away by the ruthless snow, he felt as though he was skidding through the ice bare feet, the freezing cold engulfing his swollen feet, making even the little bit of blood circulation present cut off. The panic-stricken man continued his journey deeper into the icy hell, trying to find shelter to reside in during the unsparing night. Simon let out a shaky breath, his teeth quivered uncontrollably because of the freezing cold or perhaps fear. The fear of death. Death reminded Simon of what he did. After what had happened with Joe, Simon shut himself up completely, he made his brain as empty as the barren snow-covered land he was stranded on. Alone. Three hours of walking like a no-brain zombie, Simon was finally mentally conscious again. Quick flashes of the catastrophe that went down earlier ran through his numb head. His pace grew slower than it already was as he came to a sudden halt, he looked at his cold, blue hued hands, which through his eyes looked red, covered with the blood of his friend that he left to die. Realisation hit Simon harder than the frigid wind, he cut off the rope, he was selfish. Simon’s head began to spin as all guilt gushed through him, “ I..I killed him,” Simon cried to through his dry mouth.

Joe's account

There was no chance of Simon hauling me up. It would be suicidal for him to attempt it. By now the weather had gone from bad to worse. As my body aimlessly droop in the air waiting for a miracle, I examined the thick ice wall that stood in front of me. I sweeped off the snow that blocked my view, but the tumbling heaps of snow covered my view, making it hard to see the slightest view. The storm was now growing much fierce as the wind gusts through my clothing. I tried to stabilize my body while clenching the rope with my right as tight as possible, but the torch slipped from my other hand, leaving me hanging in the eerie abyss of infinite darkness in the snowstorm. At that point on, my hopes of a miracle faded away, let alone being rescued from this inevitable nightmare. In the next minutes or so, I started to think about my family, friends, and my dream of climbing Mount Everest, only to never complete it. I closed my eyes and let my tears roll down my ice covered face with the cold blast of air enveloping my body. As I got closer to my unconsciousness, a loud boom echoed around the mountains. I awoke to find a beaming light heading straight for me. As it got closer, I my eyes traced a body of a helicopter hovering just a few feet away from me with Simon rapidly reaching out to untangle the ropes on my waist. A warm air greeted me as he dragged me in. As the helicopter sped through the flurry snowflakes, I settled on the floor while Simon covered me with a blanket and said "you're safe and sound". I replied with a coarse laugh knowing how precise his statement was.

ez

I felt faint. Like the blood from my head was draining from my body. I tried to move my limbs, but failed to do so. This thick layer of fleece-like, powder snow, enveloped me completely. There was no way I could get out of this mess. But Simon. Knowing him, he probably ran away by now. I felt my eyes go heavy, and suddenly, I could see nothing but black. No. Not now. Not like this. My mind raced to all the events we had overcome. Simon and I. As a team. The mountains. The journeys. The ups and downs, highs and lows. It couldn’t end like this; it just couldn’t. With the last ounce of my energy and sanity, I started to slowly; like an earthworm in his burrow; edge and dig my way out of this thick layer of snow. The task took, what felt like hours, probably because of my damaged leg. The pain was excruciating, but I had dealt with worse, way worse. My heart was still empty, contemplating the actual possibility that my one companion in this audacious adventure had ditched me. But I pushed that aside; for now. I could start to feel myself dig myself finally out of this calamity.

Simon's Account

There was sorrow... There was sheer disappointment running through my body. I seemingly could not forget the dreadful depictions of what happened the other day. The thought danced around my head, the thought of letting go of my best friend to his demise. Sitting motionless reluctantly made a wasted effort to erase the numerous memories of Joe. How can I live with myself? How do I explain it to others? I will never forget the look in his eyes. It was one of those moments which will be embedded in my heart forever!

There was no chance of Simon hauling me up. It would be suicidal for him to attempt it. The chilly air wind through every part of my body. My fingers numb and swollen. I couldn't feel the grip on the axe anymore. Was it still there? I laid there hoping not to die. There was nothing Simon could do. I didn't know what to do. If i cut the rope and took a leap i doubt what would be left of me. However if i stayed I'd have myself frozen to death. I was lost. Should i just get it over with and cut the rope? Or should i wait? And the snow sliding off the mountains didn't make things any better. I couldn't stand it anymore. I pulled out my swiss army knife and began snipping of the rope. I had a single string left. Once that was cut i would be falling for eternity. But just then, i felt a tug. Was i not gonna die. Would i have somehow survived. But just as luck would've have had it, the single string remaining snaps right off. I slowly watch the rope distancing itself as i fell to my death. Would this have been the end for me?

Joe's Account

There was no chance of Simon hauling me up. It would be a suicidal for him to attempt it. The frosty breeze showered upon me. Tingles of jitters crawled down my spine. Is he still there? I couldn’t feel my hands on the axe anymore. My fingers were swollen and inflated. My blue lips were numb. As I was involuntarily falling in rising speed, I knew I will die today. The bitter cold air proved me that I would breathe last, this day. I tried to grasp what was going on. As I realized this was the end.
