Resources for EFL/ESL LPDs by Jaime Mejia Mayorga

These resources were selected based on my personal academic/research interests. Moreover, I chose them thinking on the two LPDs I interviewed and their programs. I hope they can be used for preparing or (re)training English language teachers on methods for language teaching and current trends in language teaching such as intercultural competence, literacies, and technology in the language classroom.

These two resources deal with language teachers. The first one discusses who is the language teacher, while the second one discusses how teaching competences can be used for professional development. I think these two resources could be used by the LPD to prepare workshops on language teacher identities, teacher education and professional development opportunities.

This group of resources deal with culture. I chose them as I think it is necessary to start talking more explicitly about the relationship between culture and language. Also, I included resources on intercultural competence and intercultural communicative competence,

You will find resources on different aspects of language teaching.

I decided to focus on grouping resources relevant to train novice language teachers . These can also serve for ongoing professional development. I also decided to include trendy topics such as technology, intercultural communication, and literacies.

By having all these resources together, I think LPDs can use them in meaningful ways that meet the needs of their programs and instructors. If you would like for other resources to be included, please comment below.

As discussed in Thoms (2011), instructors might not incorporate technology to their teaching practice because of the lack of preparation or institutional constraints. These resources could be used to discuss the relevance of technology for language teaching, how technology can be integrated to instruction as allowed by the context, and how the use of technology promote new literacies. I also provided a set of digital resources/tool evaluations that can used in order to experiement with any of the resources evaluated.

Assessment is a crucial element in language teaching and learning. These resources provide a discussion on assessing language learners. The third resource discusses the nature and best practices of assessment, while the last one addresses classroom management, an activity that affects positively or negatively assessment. LPDs can use these resources for promoting discussion among the instructors on how students are being assessed in the program and even how they define assessment.

These resources deal with the teaching of the four language skills.
