Mr. Kofi Addressed:

discomfort of engaging in these discussions of anti-racism

often we don't engage; there's complacency

being an anti-racist is life-long

racism takes many forms, such as microaggressions, unconscious biases

judged based on the way we dress

systemic racism is reflected in wealth, income, education, justice, political power and disparities

"We can't always think that racism manifests itself in conscious hate. That's just one way it manifests itself."

"Privilege, access, ignorance, apathy and so are, those are all ways that racism manifests itself."

"You may not realize that it affects you directly, but it does because we are born into a system that perpetuates these ideas that seek to discriminate and marginalize other groups."

"No one is born racist but we're born into a system that perpetuates racism."

"It's kind of like the air you breathe. When you are born, you are forced to breath it."

"You don't have a choice. Whether you like it or not, you're going to have to breath it in. You're going to have to deal with it."

"The challenge is--what do you do about it when you encounter it?

"What do you do about it?"

"Do you speak up?"

"Do you bow your head and cower?"

Do you start questioning who you are?

"These are all things that as individuals when you do experience racism, you start to question."

"Now, you're young, this is the time for you to question these systems. These are systems that should not be in place you're in your thirties or forties and if they are, as humanity, we have truly, honestly failed."

"Because we can't continue as a society like this, right?"

"I truly, honestly believe in the human race, the human race, not the division into a white, black, yellow, no. They are there and they exist and I will not deny that."

"But I truly, honestly believe that we should all see each other as equals and until we do, these systems of inequality, these systems of racism will continue to affect us on a daily basis."

"If you wish to see meaningful change then we, we, we must all be proactive."

"Keeping silent keeps the status quo and not recognizing that these systems of detrimental to our society makes us complicit in them. "

"First piece of advice...

...BE CONSCIOUS
take a look at the world around you and reflect on how the systems have been built, how do they affect you as an individual.

Have they affected you in a positive or in a negative manner.

Have you been listened to?"

Are you ignored?

Do you speak up for others?

BE CONSCIOUS, BE CONSCIOUS."

"The next thing you need to think about it...

...ACKNOWLEDGE THAT RACISM HAS SHAPED OUR SOCIETIES AND OURSELVES WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT."

"If we internalize some of these harmful messages, what happens to us?

Does it shape our thinking?

Does it change our actions? Whether consciously or unconsciously."

"We cannot ignore the fact that this is an uncomfortable system."

"And we are going to be uncomfortable with it. And I think unless you are uncomfortable with it, you are not experiencing it. Or, you are not interacting with it in a way that you can interact with it."

"Educate yourselves. Do some reading. Try to read authors from different socio-economic backgrounds, cultural backgrounds. It gives you an opportunity to be able to change your view. And if we can, we can support each other."

"Now, how we move with this going forward? I really, honestly do not know. I think that's a question that your generation has to answer?"

"Unfortunately, in a way, my generation has failed your generation because we didn't challenge it as much as we should have. But guess what? I'm challenging you now. More so than I ever did."

"What side of the fence do you sit on? Do you want equality for every one? You want a world where we learn to respect men, women, children regardless of the colour of their skin, regardless of the choice of religion."

"I don't know. These are only questions that you can ponder, you can think about. Then as a group, you have to find solutions."

"It's hard for me to capture everything that I can and my experiences with racism but if you want to find out more or you want to have a discussion, my door is always open. Look me up...send me an email, or come by my classroom or stop me in the hallway to have a quick chat. I'm always open to discussion. Because discussion has got me to the point I am, with who I am and understanding what I am."

"This crusade is more pronounced this year than it ever has been."

"This is not the end of the discussion. The discussion has to continue. That's the only way we can gain an upper hand on racism."

"Good luck with your studies. Good luck with your research. Share your research. That's one way of spreading good information. Share your research."

"And don't be shy to speak. We're all going to make mistakes because it is an uncomfortable topic."

"But I do know that we have the tools and we have the heart to be able to come together and actually have constructive conversations that help us move forward as a society. And I think only then can we move forward and heal."

1. What spoke to me about Mr. Kofi's video was that even though racism is a serious and dehumanizing topic, he truthfully explained and guided us through his point of view and his ideas on how to interact with racism and its devastating effects. Also what spoke to me was that he stated that racism shapes our minds, how we act and, our societies's ambitions, we need to be alert on how to start resolving racism (person by person).
2. I can't connect since I have never experienced such racism, but all I know from living in Senegal, is that "on est ensemble" and that is how we need to react and move forward when dealing with racism and inequality. Country by country, we can change opinions and we can create a force, a community or a family READY to act as an opponent against racism. All we need to keep in mind is that some people are born into racism and madness and without being cautious, we could get seriously hurt and menaced, because racism takes several forms, some are more mild but then there are some that change the identity of individuals so much that they're ready to harm people that stand in their way.
3. We can start by including everyone in communities around the world, regardless of their background, their, race, their culture, their sex, their sexual identity, etc... It might seem easy but all the habitual and daily scenarios we have created are hard to reverse. Some people are too hurt to even talk about racism because of the actions we took towards racism. We all need to move forward with acceptance, with respect, with effort to make the world a better place and as a family, because without family, what are we really?

To stop racism WE as kids, at least for right now, have the power of so many voices to CHANGE racism over the world for good.

I have also experienced racism. it was over summer break and my mom, brother, aunt and I were trying to find a good restaurant to eat in. we walked through the door and immediately the owner saw us - mixed skin colour - and told us they can only do takeaway for us even though when we peeked through the hallway almost all the tables were empty. on top of it one of the waitresses told us " I do not know why he said that because we have all the space in the world for your group to sit" she was them knocked down with the words from the owner "oh do not mind her, she doesn't know anything."

To move forward we should change how education is taught to us and how the educational system fixes our minds on one idea and doesn't incorporate any others.

I think he what he said has very inspiring. I say that he was involving us in the conversation as well as himself. He also said that his generation didn't really do as much as our generation did to stop racism. I like how he said there can be multiple forms of racism like watching and condoning, microaggression and well... aggression. We talked about how he didn't want it to be divided and that we should all just be the HUMAN race instead of being divided into categories. Obviously you can see the different colors but it really doesn't matter.

1. What Mr. Kofi said that really spoke to me was that you are not born into racism, but rather you adopt it.
2. I think it is that in general, there has always been discrimination between the human race, even before Europeans found out about Africans or vice versa. And that the general population will probably always discriminate something, as throughout history we can see it is in our nature. But we can minimize this discrimination by exposing younger people too little to no discrimination at all.
3. Like I said before, there will always be at least a little bit of discrimination in a human society unless we change our nature completely. I think that in order to minimize racism we should develop environments where impressionable children are not exposed to racism, or learn about it in order to spot it and fight against it.

1. What spoke to me was that he said that no-one was born into racism and how his generation failed to erase racism and he would like us to give it a try for him/with him. He mentions that no-one is born in racism but racism is born in you. You can decide whether you are racist or not: I think that's what he means.
2. I don't have any connections to what he said but I totally agree with him. I think his words should be taken seriously and should prove to us that there is still a way of eliminating racism if we all put our minds to it.
3. I think that to move forward, we should compliment people instead of bringing them down. We should also show people that whatever happens, we are all humans and we should not be separated in 2 groups.

Something that Mr. Kofi said that spoke to me is that he said that people arent born racist, but it is like if they are born into racist air that they cannot accept. So when you see someone that is racist, it is what they have been told and what people had educated that person with.
2. Connections i can make is how systemic racism is reflected in wealth, income, and education.
3. A way we cna move forward is that we can work together to bring the society to an equal state, and try to get a way from the background you were taught and adapt to the world and its changes.
