Family exclusion and discrimination lead to a higher likelihood of economic marginalization, especially for transgender women. So poverty, in turn, puts LGBT people at high risk of violence from gang members, other members of the public, the police and other members of the security forces.

Camila Diaz Cordova, a transgender woman in El Salvador. For years, she tried to escape the violence of her life in El Salvador. In 2017, she sought asylum in the United States, where the government has completely closed its southern border to asylum-seekers, leaving them to be persecuted in their home country or Mexico. Over the years, the Trump administration has adopted increasingly draconian measures aimed at preventing LGBT asylum-seekers from reaching the United States, or by forcing asylum-seekers to stay in Mexico for long periods, thus moving asylum-seekers to areas where they do not have effective protection.
After four months in immigration detention, Diaz was deported to El Salvador in November 2017 and eventually died.
