Jackie Booe: To be perfectly honest, I'm not familiar with any other reading strategies book that is set up this way or provides strategies 'cook book' style. The video makes me really excited to read this book. It looks user-friendly, and practical! The only other books I'd say come close (in my experience) are far as the teaching/instructional language used, the learning set-up/enviroment, and the user-friendly style are the Daily 5/Cafe books and the Reading Units of Study/TCRWP books. I really like those books and found the explicit lesson plans very helpful. I think there are many commonalities pedagogically among Daily 5, TCRWP's RUoS, and Jennifer S.'s book (from what I gather from the videos).

I see some similarities between the structure of the Reading Strategies Book and Doug Lemov's Teach Like a Champion. I will admit, however, that I still read that book cover to cover because I find that it helps me have more context into how the author intends the book to be used in a classroom. I think I will find Serravallo's book more useful if I read through all strategies within a given section/topic/level before selecting a strategy to implement, since that will help me make a more deliberate strategy choice that specifically fits with my lesson.

My team and I have planned several PDs and book talks surrounding this and have created resource binders that we have accessible during our reading groups. In addition to this book, we also use the Writing Strategies book, which is equally as fantastic. The strategies are great to use for teaching specific skills for reading and writing.

The Reading Strategies Book is fantastic. I LOVE IT. It is a little similar to the Lucy Caulkins guide we sometimes use to frame our lessons at MV, but what I love about RS is that it's so much more detailed and just has so much more information, very specific information, but yet-- it's still a quick read; I can easily find a lesson for a level G kid and be ready to go in 30 seconds or so.

I think this book is unique in that it lists strategies in a way that is immediately purposeful and accessible to the teacher. It is practical in that the reader does not necessarily need to read through the entire text, or even the introduction to each section, to begin making use of the book's strategies. Serravallo's Writing Strategies book is set up in the same way. Though not organized by individual strategy, Jan Richardson's Next Steps in Guided Reading allows teachers to use what they know about a student (primarily knowledge about guided reading level) to frame which strategies and steps can be explored next.

Having only one page per strategy that includes the strategy, sample language, prompts, and an examples of an associated visual is very helpful for quick reference. I have not seen any other books that break down the strategies so concisely, but Strategies That Work by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis also contains strategy lessons.

I find the format of The Reading Strategies Book format especially helpful because it is a book based on strategies and provides teachers with lessons and wording.

I appreciate the organization of the Reading Strategies book because it makes it easy to find a strategy to use quickly. I also like that it just doesn't explain, it gives actual examples of many of the strategies. All books are structures a little differently. One book that comes to mind as being closely related is the Common Core book "Teaching Reading Sourcebook". It also gives more than just theory but practical ways to implement or use the theories in a classroom setting.
