black cat
When Coraline's family moves to the Pink Palace, she meets a black cat. The cat dislikes Coraline at first, but still lurks around. As Coraline finds the tunnel and starts traveling through it more often, she meets the black cat in that world too. The cat seems to already know the Pink Palace's secrets and how to navigate them. He teases and warns Coraline of the Other Mother's evil intentions. The black cat aids Coraline in the real world and the other world by giving her advice and bringing her one of the lost children’s eyes. In the final challenge that Coraline faces to find the eyes, he is the one who kills the mice. In the end they warm up to each other and become closer through their shared journey.

Stop motion like animation
The world of Coraline has muted colors, with mostly gray and muted tones with a few bright colors to draw our attention into what is important. The house is pink, which makes us wonder why in the beginning of the movie since everything else is dull and plain. Coraline herself, has blue hair and wears a yellow raincoat where everyone wears neutral colors. It is only when Coraline travels through the tunnel is when the vibrancy of the animation is changed. The animation is the same throughout the movie, adding a spooky element with how the world is built.

Portal Tunnel:

Similar to Alice in Wonderland, Coraline finds a way to go into the “Other World”. This is through a tunnel that connects the two homes together. The tunnel represents the Other Mother’s love and want for Coraline. Just like she took the other souls of the three children, the Other Mother wants to do the same to Coraline. This tunnel is the “consumption” of Coraline’s soul. As Coraline continuously visits the home, the more the Other Mother has control over Coraline. The mother tugs at Coraline’s soul each time she enters the tunnel. Coraline crawls through the tunnel to go to the other side.

Other Mother/ Beldam:

Hiding herself and or disguising herself as looking like Coraline’s actual mother, she is perceived in the beginning as the perfect version of her mom. She wanted to convince Coraline to stay in the new world where she can provide everything that Coraline wants. However, after Coraline notices how disturbing the world is, she wants to leave. This makes the Other Mother mad and therefore exposes who she really is. She is an arachnid who is pulling the strings of this world, or the mastermind. Her motive is to trap kids who are unsatisfied with their life / parent’s love and keep them in her world forever and steal their souls. She takes their eyes and turns them into her puppet. She uses these buttons to create dolls to spy on the real world. She is constantly looking for a new child to love and not be alone.

The cheshire cat

The Chesire cat mocks Alice with questions and sarcasm throughout the journey, and he seems distrustful at first. He gives the impression of trying to warn Alice of the dangers in Wonderland. He disappears at will just like the cat from Coraline. Both act like a stereotypical cat. They are sly and quick witted. Most people have the conception of cats being quiet and sneaky, which is what is portrayed in both films. The Cheshire cat is purple and has the magical ability to disappear at will where the cat in Coraline is able to use secret tunnels/passage portals to get from one place to another. Both are able to aid their main characters on their journey and are introduced pretty early on.

Children like animation:

The world of wonderland is supposed to look mad, crazy, and filled with color. There are things floating and spiraling all over. Each character that Alice meets on her journey is loaded with color and acts out of the norm. Similar to Coraline, wonderland represents a better version for our main character. In wonderland, everything is the opposite of what it seems, animals can speak, sing, and dance. There is a very colorful element in the wonderland however there is a sort of creepiness and uncomfortable feelings because everything is different from reality. As Alice enters through each door, there is a different type of character with these crazy abilities and acts that represent the kookooness of Wonderland.

Rabbit Hole:

Using the rabbit hole, Alice ends up in a magical world that is way different from her own real world. It presents her to an upside down world where everything is the opposite of her real word. When entering through this, all logic and reason is no longer essential to survive. In the tunnel there are chairs, teapots, lamps, and shelves that are inside. Just like in Coraline, the tunnel represents where everything is the opposite of the real world. Alice falls down the rabbit hole. Coraline craws in the mini door of her house. Both portals or tunnels are found near the main characters in their environment. Both use this as an escape from their real world.

Queen of Hearts:

Similar to the Other Mother, the queen is the ruler of Wonderland. Against people’s will she pulls the string and is the symbolic representation of the main character's inner conflict. Coraline had conflict with her real mother, which caused the Other mother to look like her. Alice is having difficulty growing up and being responsible and wants life to be nonsense, where the Queen is a strict ruler and very logical. Both rulers are strict/stubborn and want everything their way. When characters would act up in their world, they would try to eliminate the issue right away.

Something I found interesting was how I had things in common with Coraline. Watching the movie, I saw how she was moving into a new home and was away from her friends. This reminded me of when I transferred school districts in middle school and I had to start over. I was moody and wanted to go back. Another thing I noticed was she is very fast and makes decisions and knows how to act in certain situations. I think whenever I am put to a challenge, I try to think what is the most efficient way and effective way to get the task done. Coraline used the Other Mother’s love for games and tried to win back the eyes and her parents back. I think though Coraline showed how she wanted a better life and parents but ultimately realized that her parents in the real world are the best versions shows how she is grounded and caring. She is loyal to those around her at the end of the day and is a good judge of character at the end of the day. I think I am loyal to my friends and family and will always try to help them when they are in need. I try to surround myself with those who are true and not those always caught up in drama and gossip.

Watching the Coraline film, I noticed one characteristic of her that was similar to mine. It was that Coraline wanted what she couldn’t have and so when she chased it she realized it was nowhere near what she really wanted. I believe that this relates to me because when I see what other girls have and I don’t I tend to want it so bad just because I don’t have it. This can happen with anything like clothes, friendships, and more. When Coraline realized that having the Other Mother was not what she wanted, she knew that what she had at home is what she truly needed. Same with me, I feel that I see something I want and obsess over the thought of it, this caused me to convince myself that I can’t live without it. When I finally get what I want, it just doesn’t feel right and I don’t want it anymore. Coraline is very relatable to me because she understands that feeling of mistaking your want for a need. In friendships, it is better to prioritize genuine friends rather than want to be popular. With clothing, it is better to find clothes that will last a lifetime rather than a microtrend. I think realizing your true wants is very important because it led to Coraline almost losing her family for another family that didn’t seem like what it was. It’s like the saying “never leave your wife for your girlfriend”.

The main message of Coraline is “be careful what you wish for”. Sometimes I find myself struggling with that idea too. Just as Corlaine experienced, I always find myself wanting more than what I have. She wanted gloves, a different house, and new parents and it was all possible in the other world. The person who made all of these wishes of hers come true is a Replica button-eyed doppelganger of her mother also known as the Beldham. Coraline is love bombed through gifts and extravagant performances but knows deep down that it isn't real. And while it is all she wished for, she would rather have something that's real and not fabricated. I think that's an important lesson others should learn. I do find myself wishing for a lot of lavish things but what grounds me is that in the end it won't make me happy. (well maybe) And I do find myself being with others and experiencing things and while it does sort of feel like a dream come true, it’s not genuine. Sincerity, I feel, is so important and nothing is worthwhile if it's not there. The grass is greener on the other side, sure. But the grass is greener where you water it.
